Mabank players named to All-State Band
Monitor Staff Reports

Four Mabank High School Band students were awarded chairs in the All-State Band following Area tryouts in Argyle Jan. 8. Making the band are tuba player Xavier Escanlar (left), bass trombone player Zak Arnold and percussionists Alison Mitchell and Austin Louque.

Senior Zachary Arnold, juniors Alison Mitchell and Austin Louque and sophomore Xavier Escanlar will perform with the Texas All-State Band in San Antonio Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center as part of the 2011 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic and Convention.
They were chosen for this honor through a competitive process held this year across the state at District, Region and Area level events.
The Area competition was held Jan. 8 at Argyle High School.
Arnold was named to the First Chair for his performance on the bass trombone, while both Escanlar and Louque were named Second Chair for their performances on the tuba and percussion instruments, respectively
Mitchell was named Fourth Chair in percussion for her performance.
High school students selected to perform in the All-State concerts have competed through several levels of auditions, beginning in the fall of 2010, to arrive at the state level.
All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive, MHS director of bands Jeff DuBose noted.
More than 1,500 students are selected through a process matching students vying to perform in one of 13 ensembles (Band, Orchestra and Choirs). The Texas Music Educators Association sponsors the Texas All- State competition.
Selections began with 28 separate Region auditions held throughout the state, with the top performers advancing on to the Area round – the Argyle audition was one of five Area auditions around the state.
The students will audition again in San Antonio for their placement in the All-State Bands.
A total of 15 Mabank High School Band students auditioned for the opportunity to go to the All-State convention.
The other 11 who auditioned at the Area round were Brenna Gusman, Eileen Thai, Michael Gardner, Lis Valencia, Travis Story, Juan Mendez, Collin Gaston, Andrew Holmes, Tyler Powell, Justin Mitchell and Caleb King.
Mabank High School had the most students representing its Region, DuBose pointed out.
Mabank is a member of TMEA Music Region 3 of the 28 Regions that will be represented in San Antonio.
