Youth WorkCamp participant to be housed at
Mabank High School
By Robyn Wheeler
Monitor Contributing Writer
GUN BARREL CITY–Kiwanis members attending the meeting at the
Jalapeńo Tree Restaurant in Gun Barrel City, Jan. 25, heard from
guest speaker First United Methodist Church Child and Youth
Director Allison Partridge.
Partridge explained FUMC is co-sponsoring the 2012 WorkCamps
with more than 400 teens participating.
The WorkCamp will be held Sunday through Saturday, June 17-23.
Partridge said Mabank School superintendent Dr. Russell Marshall
offered up the high school classrooms and gym for the week-long
camp as well as its food workers, custodial crew and even a
big-rig for supply storage.
The 440 adults and teens must bring blowup mattresses, cots or
sleeping bags as well as change of clothes and necessary
toiletries.
“We’ve had cabanas with cold water hoses for showers in some
locations,” Partridge said, grateful for the high school
accommodations.
“It is a very structured and organized, with three meals and
worship every day,” Partridge said. “Wake up is at 6:45 a.m.,
breakfast is at 7 a.m., 8 a.m. is devotion and then everyone
goes to work.”
The teens work until 3 - 4 p.m. and once back at the school, it
is time for showers, mingling, Frizbee, games and another
devotion around 9:30 p.m. Lights out is at 11 p.m.
The volunteer teens will keep busy each day performing
hands-on-home-repair projects for the elderly such as interior
and exterior painting, mobile home skirting, wheelchair and ramp
repair or construction and weatherization.
The WorkCamp groups are allowed to travel 20 to 30 minutes away
from Mabank to do the home repair. To qualify for free home
repair, individuals must be a homeowner, elderly, low-income or
disabled.
Send your name, address, phone number, directions to your
residence and an explanation of the work you would like to have
done to FUMC Mabank Youth Group, 501 S. 3rd St., Mabank, TX,
75147 or call (903) 887-0670.
