Kemp boys stop Eustace

KEMP–With a number of starters on the bench, the hosting Kemp
Yellowjackets eased past the Eustace Bulldogs 50-40 Tuesday.
Kemp’s win opened the second round of District 13-3A basketball play for
both schools and gave the ’Jackets a 14-12 season mark and a 5-1
district record, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-6 in loop play.
Friday, the Bulldogs were scheduled to visit Mabank, while the Kemp boys
were scheduled to visit Crandall.
Tuesday, Feb. 6, Kemp will host the Kaufman Lions, hoping to avenge a
first-round loss, while Eustace will host the Crandall Pirates. Next
Friday, Feb. 9, Eustace will visit Kaufman, while Kemp will visit
Ferris.
Each evening’s slate opens with 4:30 p.m. sub-varsity games.
Kemp now has a one-game lead in the district standings. Kaufman and
Crandall are both 4-2, while Mabank fell to 3-3 with a loss to Kaufman
Tuesday, followed by Ferris at 2-4.
The ’Jackets defeated the Bulldogs 52-34 in their first-round matchup at
Eustace Jan. 12, and Kemp coach Tracy Carter chose to rest three
starters in Tuesday’s game.
With a significant edge in quickness and experience, starting senior
guards Joseph Simmons and Justin Gibson helped the ’Jackets open a 17-10
lead in the first quarter, and Kemp padded its lead to 11 points by
halftime, 32-21.
Both teams matched baskets in the second half, as a one-point scoring
edge by the Bulldogs in the third quarter left the final margin at 10
points.
Gibson, coming off a 25-point effort in an overtime win against Mabank
Jan. 26, led the ’Jackets with 16 points, including a pair of 3-point
baskets, along with five rebounds and three assists.
Simmons finished with 14 points, including three treys.
James Trim added 11 points, while Patrick Dowd had seven points and Chas
Gipson scored two points.
Junior David Graves led the Bulldogs with 13 points, while Ryan
Schwanbeck added 11 points.
Point guard Zac Keeling scored seven points, while Jacob Horton had
four, Thomas Clowdus scored three points and senior post Blake Townley
added two points.

Kemp girls bop Eustace, 72-42

KEMP–Fueled by a significant edge in quickness and team speed, the
hosting Kemp Lady Yellowjackets raced past the Eustace Lady Bulldogs
Tuesday, 72-42.
The win improved the Lady ’Jackets to 3-5 in District 13-3A basketball
play, trailing unbeaten Kaufman (8-0), Crandall (6-2) and Mabank (4-4).
Eustace fell to 1-7 in loop play, trailing Ferris (2-6).
Kemp’s girls were scheduled to visit Crandall Friday, while the Lady
Bulldogs were scheduled to visit Mabank.
Tuesday, Feb. 6, Eustace will wind up the second round of district play
and the regular season when they host Crandall, while Kemp will host
11th-ranked Kaufman in their season finale.
Each evening opens with 4:30 p.m. sub-varsity games.
In their first-round matchup at Eustace Jan. 12, the Lady ’Jackets won
by 30 points, and Tuesday’s contest proved to be no closer.
After a tight first quarter, the Lady ’Jackets blew open a 10-6 game
with a 25-4 run in the second quarter, forging a 35-10 halftime lead.
Senior Ashley Zellmer keyed the run, scoring 13 of her game-high 34
points, including two of her five 3-point baskets.
In the second half, the Lady ’Jackets continued to push the ball upcourt
at every opportunity, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 19-12 in the third
quarter and 18-10 in the fourth quarter to forge the final 30-point
margin.
Zellmer hit three treys in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 of the Lady
’Jackets’ 18 points.
Sarah Smith added 18 points for the Kemp girls, while Meagan Lacy and
Amanda Lawrence each chipped in five points.
Both Alex Valentine and Ashley Darby scored four points each, and Kate
Donovan added two points.
Cassie Freeman led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 points, including a trio of
3-point baskets in the second half.
Alyson Harlan added nine points, while Traci Garrett scored five points,
Brisha Ward scored three points and Shelby Knight added a free throw.
