Presidents Day closings
In honor of Presidents Day, county offices in Van Zandt and Kaufman are closed. Henderson County offices are open.
Banks and post offices will close, however check with your bank for its hours if located within another business facility.
All area city offices will be open for business.

49er’s senior citizens
The Cedar Creek Lake 49er’s Senior Citizens Club is hosting a country and western dance and potluck dinner from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday (tonight) and any Thursday night with music by Chuck & the 49er’s. No smoking or alcohol. The new cookbook is available. Located two blocks south on Arnold Hills Road, off SH 334, in Seven Points.

American Legion dinner
The American Legion Post 310 is hosting a chalupa/tostado dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at the post home on SH 198, Gun Barrel City. Proceeds benefit area children and youth activities.

Valentine’s dinner
The Gun Barrel City Order of the Eastern Star No. 1114 is hosting a Valentine’s Friendship Dinner from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Cedar Creek Lake United Methodist Church, 100 S. Malakoff Methodist
Malakoff First United Methodist Church is recognizing Kay Mattingly during worship service at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 19. Former Sunday school students are invited. A reception in her honor follows.

Store clerk found unconscious after robbery
Convenience store clerk unable to identify her attackers

GUN BARREL CITY–Officers responding to a 9-1-1 call Friday found a clerk unconscious behind the counter at the One Stop Convenience Store at 101 East Main St. in Gun Barrel City shortly before midnight Feb. 10.
She was transported by ambulance to ETMC-Athens. It was later learned that the clerk had been in the process of closing when someone attacked her from behind, rendering her unconscious.
Officers Jason Ramsey and Cody Dickerson were dispatched to the suspected robbery scene, according to a press release from the Gun Barrel City Police Department.
The clerk said she was counting money when she was attacked and that she was unable to identify her assailant.
An undetermined amount of cash was taken.
Police chief Damon Boswell said the case is being actively worked by department investigators.

Tool city councilman Dennis Candage dies

TOOL–Tool City Councilman Dennis Jay Candage died at his home suddenly, early Tuesday.
Candage has served on the Tool City Council since May, 2010.
He and his wife, Nancy, were married Nov. 6, 2010. The couple resided in Paradise Bay.
Candage has lived in the area for 40 years, always active in the community.
“He has always worked to give back to his community as long as I have known him,” Tool fire Chief Mike Grant said.
Grant is also a city police officer and said the department received a call at about 2 a.m.
First Responders went to his home and Candage was transported to East Texas Medical Center emergency in Gun Barrel City, where he was pronounced dead at about 3:30 a.m.
“Candage was in the city offices Monday and he seemed fine,” Grant said.
Candage was a member of the Tool Volunteer Fire Department, he served on the Building and Grounds committee at Providence Baptist Church and was caretaker for the Tool Cemetery. Memorial Service for City of Tool Councilman Dennis Candage will be at the Providence Baptist Church in Tool on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 11 am.
