Eustace scares Ferris
Monitor Staff Reports
FERRIS–Eustace’s Bulldogs nearly pulled off the upset in
Tuesday’s regular-season finale, throwing a huge scare into the hosting
Ferris Yellowjackets before falling, 83-72.%202-17%20copy.jpg)
The Bulldogs finished District 13-3A basketball play at 0-10, while
Ferris finished at 7-3 and tied with Mabank, Kaufman and Crandall for
first place (see related story).
Unlike the Jan. 25 first-round matchup in Eustace, when Ferris blew out
the Bulldogs in the second half to win by 40 points, Tuesday’s
fast-paced contest was hotly contested throughout.

Eustace Bulldog David Graves (10) battles for a rebound during the
Bulldogs’ 76-36 home-court loss to the Ferris Yellowjackets Jan. 25.
The Yellowjackets took an early 24-22 lead in the
first quarter, and outscored Eustace 24-21 in the second quarter to
forge a five-point halftime lead, 48-43.
Ferris boosted its advantage in the third quarter, outscoring the
Bulldogs 19-12 to take a 12-point lead, 67-55, going into the fourth
quarter.
In the final frame, the Bulldogs outscored Ferris 17-16 to forge the
final 11-point margin.

District 13-3A tie; tourney
set in Dallas
Monitor Staff Reports
DALLAS–In a stunning example of parity, four of the six
District 13-3A boys basketball teams finished in a tie for first place.
In the final regular-season games Tuesday, Kaufman defeated visiting
Crandall, 62-45, while Mabank easily handled Kemp, 69-35, and winless
Eustace threw a severe scare into Ferris before falling 83-72 (see
related stories).
Mabank, Ferris, Kaufman and Crandall all finished with 7-3 records in
district play, as each split home-and-home contests with the other
teams.
Kemp finished at 2-8, defeating Eustace twice by a total of two points.
That’s about as balanced a district race as one could ask.
A mini-tournament to determine the district’s playoff seedings was
scheduled for Thursday and Friday at the Ellis Davis Field House in
Dallas.
Mabank and Ferris were to play at 6 p.m. Thursday, followed at 8 p.m. by
Crandall and Kaufman. Results of those games were not available by
presstime Thursday.
Thursday’s losers were scheduled to play for the district’s third-place
playoff berth at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by Thursday’s winners playing
for the district champion and runner-up berths.
The district champion gets a bye in the first round of the playoffs,
which open with bidistrict action next weekend (Feb. 21-23).
See the Thursday, Feb. 21, issue of The Monitor for complete tournament
coverage.
