Cedar Creek Yacht Club begins new sailing season
Special to The Monitor’
GUN BARREL CITY–The Cedar Creek Yacht Club elected new officers at their annual meeting Feb. 26, and appointed committee members to lead the club’s activities and racing schedule, developing a full 2009 calendar of events.
Mark Stanley was chosen to lead the club as commodore, along with vice commodore Nick Nicholas.
Other officers include secretary Jim Wallace and Roger Murphy, who continues as treasurer.
A three-hour safety sailing clinic is being conducted for club members.
At the clinic, yachtmen will be reacquainted with “the rules of the road” and review vital maintenance issues, and also introduce newcomers to the exciting and fun sport of sailboating and racing.
The safety clinic is to be held in conjunction with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 5-14, using its facility, located next to Don’s Port Marina in Tool.

A new sailing year begins.

Race committee chairman Ed Ebel told the 40 or so club members that last year many boats had to pull out of races at the last minute, due to maintenance problems.
“This and safety will be stressed heavily during the clinic,” Ebel said.
In addition, a number of boats couldn’t race because they didn’t have a crew, he said.

Ebel highly recommended those interested in sailing should get involved with the club and learn to crew, or help by manning the race committee boat.
“We really need your help this coming year,” Ebel said. “It’s a whole different race on the committee boat.
“Once you’ve done it once or twice, you’re sure to find it exciting and interesting,” he added.
Two races are set monthly, April through June, along with the annual summer regatta in June (see race schedule).
The club also holds monthly socials at members’ homes, and female members also hold a separate monthly luncheon on the second or third Wednesday.
More information about the Cedar Creek Yacht Club can be found at their website, http://ccyctx.com , or by calling Ebel at (903) 451-3318.
