Storm safety program set for March 27
Special to The Monitor
ATHENS–The National Weather Service (NWS) in Fort Worth is
holding a SKYWARN severe weather program from 7-9 p.m.,
Tuesday, March 27. The free program is open to the public
and will be held at the Henderson County Senior Citizens
Building in Athens.
The two-hour presentation will discuss thunderstorm
information and behavior, severe weather production and
features associated with severe storms.
Nonthreatening clues often mistaken for major signs will
also be discussed as well as steps for keeping families safe
during a thunderstorm and spotter operations and reporting
procedures.
The program also includes a 30-minute video of storm clips.
“We have quite a bit of new material for this year’s spotter
training program,” Fort Worth NWS Warning coordination
meteorologist Mark Fox said.
“We’ll show some behind-the-scenes activity from last year’s
severe weather operations and will show how and why severe
weather reports from spotters are so essential,” Fox added.
“By coming to this program, you will learn a lot about
thunderstorms,” Fox said.
“Even if you don’t become an active storm spotter, you will
learn about how storms work and the visual clues you can
identify when storms are in your area.”
A discussion on severe weather safety tips will better
prepare you and your family for the threats that storms
pose, Fox added.
In 2011 northern and central Texas experienced more than 44
recorded tornadoes.
The Henderson County severe weather program is one of more
than 60 classes the Fort Worth NWS will conduct between
January and March.
The National Weather Service provides forecasts, warnings
and weather services for 46 counties in north Texas.
The Henderson County Senior Citizens Building is located at
3356 SH 31 East in Athens.
