MHS boys
make 1st playoffs
Monitor Staff Reports
MABANKIn their first-ever playoff appearance, the Mabank High School Panther boys
soccer team fell to the visiting Kilgore Bulldogs, 5-1, Friday.
Not only did the Panthers finally make the playoffs in their seventh year of existence,
the 20-member team has just four seniors Ryan Floyd, Jamison Gryder, Tyler Lynn and
Brandon Stringer.
They were very excited about the opportunity to play in the playoffs as the first
team ever to make it, head coach Weldon Killingsworth said. It was a great
experience for the team and the school to host a playoff game at our stadium.
Kilgore was the first-place team in their district and very talented, Killingsworth said.
The boys played very hard and never quit during the game, he pointed out.
It was a rough-and-tumble match, particularly in the first half, as Mabank spectators
loudly complained about no-calls by the referee (who did call a couple of players together
for a quick finger-shaking conference after one collision near the Panther goal).
Ricardo Robles, one of 13 juniors on the team, scored the Panthers only goal in the
second half.
The boys now know what it takes to get to the playoffs, so next year, we expect to
continue our success, Killingsworth said.Jackets
