Panthers nip ’Dogs, 9-5

EUSTACE–Mabank’s Panthers improved to 2-0 in District 13-3A baseball play Tuesday with a 9-5 victory over the hosting Eustace Bulldogs.
Now 0-2 in district play, the Bulldogs were scheduled to visit Crandall Friday, while the Panthers were scheduled to host Ferris, weather permitting.

Tuesday, April 3, Mabank will visit Crandall, while Eustace will host Kaufman, both games with a 6:30 p.m. start.
Friday, April 6, Eustace will visit Ferris, while Mabank will host Kemp.
After a scoreless first inning, the Panthers shocked the Bulldogs with a five-run second inning, chasing Bulldog starter Ryan Compton from the mound for reliever Lucas Cope.
Compton gave up just two hits and only one earned run out of the five runs scored, but issued four walks and hit one batter.
Over the rest of the game, Cope allowed four runs, two earned, on just three hits and notched two strikeouts, issuing three walks and also hitting one batter.
David Taylor went the distance for the Panthers, giving up five runs (two earned) on five hits and notching eight strikeouts, while issuing three walks.
Neither team scored in the third inning, but the Panthers made it 7-0 in the top of the fourth with two runs, taking advantage of a Bulldog error.
Eustace came right back in the bottom of the fourth to score two runs, getting a double from Chris Compton and taking advantage of a Panther error.
Eustace scored again in the bottom of the fifth when Aaron Coffey singled, advanced on a passed ball and later dashed home.
Mabank added a run in the top of the sixth, thanks to a leadoff double by Chanz Sullivan, to make it 8-3, and made it 9-3 in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by R.P. Smith.
Eustace came back to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double from Cope and a single by Ryan Compton.
Mabank’s Mark Groom had the best day at the plate of either squad, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

LSHSRA finals set May 11-12 in Athens

ATHENS–The top 15 contestants in each event of the Lone Star High School Rodeo Association will compete in the two-day finals rodeo Friday and Saturday, May 11-12.
The LSHSRA finals will be held at the Henderson County Fairgrounds in Athens, opening with a 7:30 p.m. performance Friday and a 10 a.m. performance Saturday.
Area students participating include Booter Haas of Eustace High School, and Kelsie Busby and Cassie Sparkman from Mabank High School.
Also, Brandon Grissom, Trevor Hamilton and Nicole Harrison from Kemp High School, and Kody Durham and Bobby Montgomery from Malakoff High School.
The finals rodeo will feature all the classic rodeo events, including bareback and saddle bronc riding, breakaway roping, calf roping and goats without a horse.
Other events include steer undecorating, steer wrestling, girls ribbon roping, team roping, goats and boys ribbon roping.
Also, poles, chute dogging, barrels and bull riding.
