Mineola edges hosting Kemp
Monitor Staff Reports
KEMPIn a battle of Yellowjackets, visiting Mineola put together some timely
defensive plays to keep Kemp winless in district with a 7-4 victory Tuesday.
Now 7-8 on the season and 0-4 in District 14-3A baseball play, the Kemp Yellowjackets were
scheduled to visit the first-place Canton Eagles Friday night. Canton improved to 4-0
Tuesday with a come-from-behind 6-5 win over hosting Van.
The Jackets are scheduled to visit Van Tuesday, April 6, and then will host Wills
Point Friday, April 9. (Kemps March 23 first-round game was moved to Wills Point,
due to wet grounds.)
Aaron Haessley went the distance for Kemp against Mineola, allowing seven runs (four
earned) through seven full innings, while striking out five and issuing just one walk.
Kemp opened an early 2-0 lead when Zach Allison walked and was bunted forward to second by
Kyle Kimberling.
Haessley delivered a one-out RBI single, and then scored after back-to-back singles by
Bryce King and Cody Benavidez.
Kimberling brought Allison home again with a two-out RBI single in the fourth inning.
Kemp had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with a
couple of walks and a bloop single by Josh House.
Dalton Irby reached base and a run scored on a bases-loaded catcher interference call,
bringing Kemp within striking range at 7-4 with nobody out.
Allisons grounder to first was relayed back to the catcher, nipping Cris Murray at
the plate.
Kimberling then grounded to third for a 5-2-3 double play that ended the threat.
Benavidez went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI, while Haessley, Allison and Kimberling
all finished 1-for-3 with RBIs (Allison stroking a double and adding two stolen bases).
