Red Cross needs volunteers
Special to The Monitor
TERRELL– If you are a person who has compassion and wants to
help when you know someone is in need, then the American Red
Cross in Terrell needs you! It will be the best job you
never got paid to do!
Currently the Red Cross is recruiting volunteers to serve
when disaster strikes.
You may serve on one of our local Disaster Action Teams,
responding to house fires and other recurrent events.
Or you might serve on one of our Shelter Teams, which
springs into action during a more widespread disaster like a
tornado or winter ice storm. You could even do both.
It is easy to become involved and you will get great
training. Visit
www.redcrossdallas.org, click on “Volunteer”,
complete the online Volunteer Application and sign up for
“Disaster Services Overview” training Saturday, April 9 in
Terrell.
The “Disaster Services Overview” class, scheduled from 8
a.m. until noon, provides an overview of Red Cross services
in disaster and volunteer opportunities with Red Cross
locally and nationally. There is no charge.
The Terrell Branch of the American Red Cross serves Kaufman,
Rockwall, and Van Zandt counties, providing relief to
victims of disasters and teaching people how to prepare for
emergencies.
For more information, please contact the American Red Cross
office in Terrell at (972) 563-1030.
Kemp High School One-Act
Play makes District champs
Monitor Staff Reports
KEMP– There’s a first time for everything, the old saying
goes, and for Kemp High School’s One-Act Play, the saying is
now a welcome fact.
For the first time in Kemp Independent School District
history, its One–Act Play performance was named District
13-3A Champion.
The play, Charlie Mee’s “Iphigenia,” a modern mash up of the
Greek trilogy, was performed March 31, at Mabank High School
Auditorium.
Having advanced to Area Competition, the players will now
perform at 11 a.m. Thursday (today) at the Terrell
Performing Arts Center.
Tree
downed under first storm of spring

Ten-year-old Malia Cantrell came home from school
Monday to find this 65-foot tree blown down in the
middle of her backyard in Seven Points. Happily,
only an ornamental garden and bird bath were lying
underneath the old tree, which also supported a
light fixture over the driveway. Wind and rains
overnight and into the morning were hailed as the
first of April showers that bring May flowers.

Friends of the Animals
offer cat surgery special
Special to The Monitor
GUN BARREL CITY–Friends of the Animals Low-Cost Spay/Neuter
Clinic in Gun Barrel City is offering a special for getting
your cat spayed or neutered on Tuesday, May 3.
All cat spays and neuters are 20 percent off for males or
females!
This makes male cat surgeries, normally $25, just $20, and
female cat surgeries, normally $35, just $28!
This offer is limited so please call soon.
Surgery is done by appointment only and may be booked by
calling (903) 887-PETS (7387).
A male cat can impregnate dozens of females in a single day
– and a female cat can give birth up to four times a year.
These are good reasons for getting your cats fixed now
before they give birth.
Friends, a non-profit charity, has run the low-cost
spay/neuter clinic in Gun Barrel City since July 2002, and
has performed over 22,000 surgeries.
What this means is that literally millions of little lives
have been saved and prevented.
But even without the special sale price, the cost of being a
responsible pet owner is very cheap.
Dog surgeries range from $35 to $65 depending on the sex and
size of the animal.
Surgery is performed by Dr. Glen Campbell who runs a
veterinary practice in Garland and comes to the lake each
Tuesday to do surgeries.
Dr. Campbell was named by D Magazine as one of the top
veterinarians in Dallas.
The clinic also sells Frontline Plus to control fleas and
ticks, a must this time of year. This has been one of the
worst flea seasons ever – don’t let your pet suffer.
The clinic also microchips pets every Tuesday. For $20 a
chip is inserted into the scruff of your pet. If he’s lost,
every shelter in the area has a scanner – and your pet comes
home. This price includes the chip and the permanent
national registration.
Call (903) 887-PETS for more information about the clinic or
to volunteer.
Tax-deductible donations to this non-profit charity may be
sent to P.O. Box 5455 in Gun Barrel City, 75147, or visit
the website
www.friendsoftheanimals.org.
