Inaugural Band Boosters golf tournament big success
Monitor Staff Reports
KEMP–Monday’s inaugural Kemp Band Boosters golf tournament at the Cedar Creek Country Club turned out to be a huge success.
The tournament raised enough money to purchase a new 32-foot gooseneck cargo trailer, which doubled the band’s cargo-carrying capability.
In addition, the tournament also raised funds to sponsor six scholarships for this year’s seniors, players heard.
During this past year, the Kemp High School band won the Sweepstakes for the first time in history – taking first division honors at both the UIL marching contest, and the UIL concert and sight-reading contest.
Some 34 KHS band students tried out for UIL Solo and Ensemble contests, and 31 will be advancing to state competition.
The team of Edgar Cotton, Bruce Prestidge, David Cotton and Greg Merritt won first place at the tournament.
Low gross honors went to the foursome of Earl Chambers, Shawn McNeely, Chip Chambers and Byron Walker, while the group of Donna and Kurt Schumacher, Danny Merrill and Bobby Weckherlin took second low gross.
Closest-to-the-pin prizes went to Merrill, Edgar Cotton, Jason Hardy and Rodney Keeling, while McNeely and Weckherlin took long drive honors.
