junior wins all-around cowboy

MABANKMabank High School junior Dustin Jackson won the Region IV All-Around Cowboy
title and qualified for state in three different events at the Texas High School  Dustin Jackson
Mabank High School junior
Rodeo Association season finals in Athens.
Jackson has competed in bareback, calf roping, steer wrestling, team roping (as the
header) and boys cutting throughout the THSRA season.
At the Region IV finals in Athens March 19-21, Jackson qualified for the state finals in
bareback, steer wrestling and boys cutting.
With his performance, Jackson also won the all-around title and a custom saddle.
Jackson also competes in the North Texas High School Rodeo Association events in Saginaw
each week.
Currently, Jackson is the all-around cowboy points leader there, but the NTHSRA season
does not end until May 1.
The THSRA state competition will be held in Abilene June 13-19.

Inaugural Band Boosters golf tournament

KEMPMondays inaugural Kemp Band Boosters golf tournament
at the Cedar Creek Country Club turned out to be a huge success.
The tournament raised enough money to purchase a new 32-foot gooseneck cargo trailer,
which doubled the bands cargo-carrying capability.
In addition, the tournament also raised funds to sponsor six scholarships for this
years seniors, players heard.
During this past year, the Kemp High School band won the Sweepstakes for the first time in
history taking first division honors at both the UIL marching contest, and the UIL
concert and sight-reading contest.
Some 34 KHS band students tried out for UIL Solo and Ensemble contests, and 31 will be
advancing to state competition.
The team of Edgar Cotton, Bruce Prestidge, David Cotton and Greg Merritt won first place
at the tournament.
Low gross honors went to the foursome of Earl Chambers, Shawn McNeely, Chip Chambers and
Byron Walker, while the group of Donna and Kurt Schumacher, Danny Merrill and Bobby
Weckherlin took second low gross.
Closest-to-the-pin prizes went to Merrill, Edgar Cotton, Jason Hardy and Rodney Keeling,
while McNeely and Weckherlin took long drive honors.
