Kemp nips Eustace, 12-11
Monitor Staff Reports
KEMP–The hosting Kemp Lady Yellowjackets edged the Eustace Lady Bulldogs
12-11 in a season-finale nail-biter Friday.
Eustace opened the contest by scoring three runs in the top of the first
inning off Kemp’s Keleigh Collinsworth, who went the distance for the
Lady ’Jackets.
However, the Kemp girls came back to score four runs with two out in the
bottom of the first to take a 4-3 lead.
Collinsworth started the two-out rally with a walk off Eustace pitcher
Crystal Ross, and an error allowed the next batter, Sarah Smith, to
reach first.
Bre Griffin then walked to load the bases.
Brittany Henderson (Collinsworth’s courtesy runner) scored the first
Kemp run on a passed ball, and Paige Moore reached on a fielder’s
choice.
Anna Villanueva then cleared the bases with a three-RBI stand-up double.
In the second inning, Collinsworth’s single scored Wright, and Smith
followed with a double to score Henderson.
Three Eustace errors led to three Kemp scores in the third inning, but
neither team scored in the fourth and fifth innings.
Another Kemp rally came in the sixth inning, started by Griffin’s
single. Villanueva later came through with another big hit to score
Griffin and Moore, who had walked.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lady ’Jackets came to bat with
the score tied, 11-11.
Kemp got a couple of baserunners on a singles by White and Collinsworth.
Smith’s shot to left field scored White to end the game.
Kemp had nine hits and committed three errors, while Eustace had six
hits. Collinsworth gave up 12 walks and had three strikeouts in the
game.
Mabank edges Ferris, 3-2
Monitor Staff Reports
MABANK–A two-run single by senior Mark Groom in the fifth inning gave
the hosting Mabank Panthers a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the Ferris
Yellowjackets Friday.
Mabank was scheduled to host Crandall Tuesday (weather permitting), and
is scheduled to end the second round of District 13-3A baseball play and
the regular season on the road Friday, April 27, when they visit Kemp
for a 4:30 p.m. showdown.
The visiting Yellowjackets pushed across runs in both the second and
third innings to take a 2-0 lead.
In the second, Ferris got to Panther sophomore hurler Kolton Browning
for back-to-back singles, and Browning gave up a leadoff double in the
third inning.
Browning scattered five hits, giving up two runs (one earned) and issued
one walk while striking out 12 Yellowjackets in seven innings of work.
Yellowjacket starter Izzy Munoz pitched five innings and gave up just
four hits, three runs and walked three, while striking out three
Panthers.
Mabank scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Browning singled and later scored on an RBI single by David Taylor.
Munoz issued walks to Chancz Sullivan and Browning in the fifth inning,
and Groom’s shot to right scored them both – Browning slid in from
second base when the Ferris outfield failed to throw home in time to cut
him off.
That proved to be the game-winner, as Munoz tossed three strikeouts and
Browning pitched two strikeouts and a routine ground-out in the sixth
inning.
In the seventh, Browning got one strikeout and two routine outs to
secure the victory.
