Region II track meets
rescheduled
Area athletes to compete at Commerce, Denton college
campuses

CEDAR CREEK LAKE–Following a statewide outcry from coaches and school
districts, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) rescinded its
earlier decision to scrap regional track meets last week.
Official word that 20 regional meets would be rescheduled and not
cancelled (due to swine flu concerns) came in a news release issued late
Thursday, just after The Monitor’s Sunday issue went to press.
“The decision to suspend competition was not a decision we took
lightly,” UIL executive director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said in the
release.
“Much effort and consideration was given to resurrect the regional track
meets and change the dates for the state meet,” he added. “With the
cooperation of our regional sites and the University of Texas, we are
now able to hold the regional and state track meets as we had originally
intended.”
As rescheduled, Texas A&M University-Commerce will host the Class 3A
Region II track meet Friday and Saturday, May 15-16. More than three
dozen athletes from Eustace and Kemp high schools will be competing.
The University of North Texas in Denton will host the Class 4A Region II
track meet Tuesday and Wednesday, May 12-13. Three Mabank High School
athletes will be competing.
The state track meet was rescheduled to Friday and Saturday, June 5-6,
at Myers Stadium on the UT campus.
DeLong claims crown
Monitor Staff Reports

MABANK–Mabank High School senior Jason DeLong took first place in the
District 15-4A golf tournament and placed high at the Region II golf
tournament in Denton.
At the district tournament April 6-7 on the Creekview Golf Course in
Crandall, DeLong shot rounds of 89 and 74 to finish with a tournament
total of 163, one shot better than Forney’s Ethan Doan.
DeLong shot rounds of 76 and 92 to total 168 at the Region II
tournament, held at Robson Ranch Golf Course in Denton April 22-23.
“Jason had a very good year, and he will be missed on our golf team next
year,” golf coach Jeff Lee noted.
“I am extremely proud of his play this year, and especially the way he
fought back on the second day of district to claim the individual
championship,” Lee added.
