Energy Star sales tax holiday set May 28-30
Special to The Monitor
AUSTIN–Texas Comptroller Susan Combs says Memorial Day weekend is a great time for Texans to replace old, inefficient appliances during the fourth annual Energy Star Sale Tax Holiday, May 28-30.
“Much of Texas is currently suffering severe drought and summertime temperatures have arrived early, reminding us of the need to conserve Texas’ precious resources,” Combs stated.
“You can save water and energy by purchasing efficient, Energy Star appliances. During the Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday, Texans will not pay state or local sales taxes on new appliances,” she said.
The tax break applies to Energy Star rated air conditioners priced at $6,000 or less, refrigerators priced at $2,000 or less, ceiling fans, compact fluorescent light bulbs, clothes washers, dishwashers, dehumidifiers and programmable thermostats.
“The Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday is a great opportunity for consumers to save twice on energy efficient appliances. There will be no sales tax and savings on monthly utility bills,” Combs added.
Products that qualify for the sales tax exemption will display the Energy Star logo on the appliance, the packaging or the Energy Guide label.
More information about the tax holiday is available at www.texaspowerfulsmart.org.

Mabank ISD probationary teachers face possible layoffs
By Barbara Gartman
Monitor Staff Writer

MABANK–To many, especially teachers and parents, the state’s proposed education budget cuts are equal to standing on the edge of a cliff and waiting for that final shove over the edge.
Teachers are dreading the end of the school year, fearful they may not have a job the next year.
But school administrators say they have to play a waiting game that may not be decided until the end of August, depending on the timetable set by the state legislature.
“We know as much now (about school funding) as we knew six months ago,” Mabank Independent School District superintendent Dr. Russell Marshall said. “This year’s budget is still on track, but next year’s is in limbo until the Legislature makes a decision.”
While Mabank ISD has been using attrition (no replacement hires for retirees or move-offs) to reduce its staff numbers, it has also sent notices to three teachers on probationary status informing them they will not be needed for the coming school year.
Mabank ISD hires for one year at a time, with first three years considered a probationary period, meaning teachers can be let go without cause.
All professional employees in positions eligible to receive probationary contracts must complete at least three complete one-year probationary contracts before they can get a term contract.
The terms of probation are fully spelled out in the district’s rules DCA (Local).
While teachers with several years’ experience can be hired under a single year’s probationary contract, others typically are not.
Terry Tanner, a shop teacher, received a termination letter worded the same as the ones sent to the other two probationary teachers.
It stated that it was in “the best interest of the school district” that his contract not be renewed.
Tanner expressed his disappointment, especially since his subject, the Buildings and Trades class, is being terminated.
Tanner has been teaching at MISD for two years, and was set to start his third year of probation.
Tanner said he had about 20 students in two class periods, then as he was certified to teach automotive skills, he also taught in that class.
Low student enrollment was one reason the class was discontinued, and, of course, budget cuts, Marshall said.
“We still have a lot of career and technology classes,” Marshall explained. “There are opportunities in vocational agriculture, auto repair, careers in technical sciences such as nurse technology and medical terminology.”
