Mabank FFA members, guests honored at banquet

MABANK–Freshman Jaci Belcher was named the Star Greenhand, Elena Reyes was named the Star Chapter Farmer and Jake Costlow was selected as the Star Lone Star degree honoree at the annual Mabank FFA Member-Parent Banquet May 13.

Approximately 115 members and guests heard details about the chapter’s accomplishments during the past school year, which included bringing back more than $115,000 in winnings at various major livestock shows.
At the State Fair of Texas, Mabank students showed 14 barrows, with two making the final auction, and FFA members collected nine breed championships at the Dash for Cash.
Senior and outgoing chapter president Valerie Manning notched sixth place in the heavyweight ABC steer category at the Fort Worth Stock Show.
In San Antonio, junior member Nicholas Bearden had a seventh place heifer, while Maci Corder had a 10th place.
At the Houston Livestock Show, Jarred Odom and Ethan Almanza collected a champion and reserve champion in the steers, while Josh Odom collected a ninth place with two barrows and a championship with his Santa Gertrudis steer, while the chapter’s restored 1959 John Deere tractor received a blue ribbon.
At the Henderson County Livestock Show, Mabank chapter members had 15 pigs and six steers make the show auction, and the John Deere tractor was the reserve champion ag mechanics project.
The next week at the Kaufman County Livestock Show, 19 pigs made the sale and members won eight classes, while seven steers made the sale.
Elizabeth Nance and Costlow showed the champion and reserve champion steer, while Almanza had the reserve champion ABC steer and Kendall Tanner had the top lamb.
The restored tractor also was the reserve champion ag mechanics project at the Kaufman show.
Manning received a $4,000 scholarship from the Fort Worth Stock Show, and is in the running for a Texas FFA scholarship, worth anywhere from $5,000 to $16,000, the gathering heard.
FFA alumni scholarships went to Manning, Griffin Marshall, Zach McDonald, Bobby Terry, Hailey Tucker, Kevin Teague, Andrew Cosper, Jeffrey Stockton and Hunter Stout.
During the gathering, Victoria and Kevin Bishop were presented with an honorary chapter membership for their help during the school year.
Certificates of appreciation were also given to the Mabank High School maintenance team of George Long, Chris Brown and Steve Templin.
Also honored for their help were Christy and Bill Brashear.
Competition teams were recognized – the radio team (Manning, Broocke Lewis and Adam Cary) finished second in district and seventh in area.
The Greenhand skills team (Dakota Johnson, Jeffrey Fannin and Garrett Graham) was also recognized, along with Manning’s performance on the senior creed competition.
The chapter’s livestock judging team (Costlow, Almanza, McDonald and Jarred Odom) took third in district, and the dairy foods judging team (Marshall, Stockton and Reyes was fourth.
During the meal portion of the banquet, members and guests were entertained by Travis Bolt, who won the district’s talent contest.
Bolt played guitar and sang some original songs, along with some country standards.
Proficiency awards were presented to:
• Shelby Brashear – swine production,
• Cary – agricultural communications,
• McDonald – swine placement,
• Nance – diversified livestock production,
• Caleb Atherton – poultry production,
• Manning – beef production and
• Costlow – beef placement.
The outgoing officers introduced the incoming officers for the 2010-11 school year.
Costlow (who was president as a freshman) will be president, joined by vice president Almanza, secretary Nance, treasurer Belcher, reporter Mallory Norman, sentinel Cary Pyle, student advisor Aaron Burke and parliamentarian Maci Corter.
Certificates of academic merit, recognizing members who maintained a 95 or better grade average, were presented to Almanza, Costlow, Norman, McDonald, Stockton, Manning, Marshall and Aaron Cosper.
Also, Stout, Teague, Macy Anderson, Ami Tillery, Halee Holcomb, Sydney Pottorf, Atherton, Jarred Odom, Ashley Reeder, Cary, Hannah Holcomb, Nance and Brooke Lewis.
Also, Hailey Tucker, Corder, Dustin Jackson, Jonathan Hoops, Tanner Sparks, Morgan Thornton, Andrew Brown, Aaron Burke, Joel Lynn, Bolt, Austin Clamon, Roy Dewberry, Fannin, Garret Graham, Johnson, Kerry Pyle and Halee Holcomb.
Junior members were also recognized – Foster Bishop, Ethan Bishop, Tyler Schlebach, Shelby Brashear, John Carter Teague, Nicholas Bearden and Colten Corder.
