class far exceeded its goal of presenting a new oven to the
Kaufman Senior Citizen Center.

The 2011-12 Kaufman Leadership
class is joined by staff and friends of the Kaufman County
Senior Center to celebrate the installation of a new oven
and funding of repairs and upgrades to the facility with a
ribbon cutting. Center director Cyrena Stewart (third from
right) cuts the ribbon and to her left is Phyllis Walker,
director of the Kaufman County Dept. of Aging.
The class took on the Center as its project and the members
proceeded to earn the funds needed for the purchase. June 6,
they gathered at the Center for refreshments and a ribbon
cutting.
The group raised the $2,500 needed for the commercial oven
plus another $6,500, which was donated to effect repairs and
paint the building.
The Center not only prepares noon-time meals for seniors who
come to the center, but it cooks the hot lunches for the
area Meals on Wheels program.
The class enrolled 20 participants who became well
acquainted with various public service areas, such as human
services, economic development corporations, city, county
and state government, education, health care and
transportation.
