Van Zandt County marks 75 years of
courthouse service
By Terry Britt
Staff Writer
CANTON–Van Zandt County celebrated a landmark Friday – with the
courthouse’s 75th anniversary rededication ceremony. The
county’s government seat has stood in downtown Canton since
1937.
With
most local elected officials in attendance, along with state and
federal officials or their representatives, a crowd of more than
100 people witnessed some of the work of the Van Zandt County
Historical Commission.
Lawrence Greer presented a detailed — and, at times, somewhat
colorful — biographical summary of the three past county judges,
pictured in restored oil paintings from the commission.
Those paintings will be displayed in the courthouse and are the
start of what will become a full series of such paintings.
