Services for Melba Butcher Smith, 73, Eustace, were held June 26, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Eustace with the Rev. Paul McKinney officiating. Burial was in Goshen Cemetery in Eustace under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank.
Smith was born Aug. 28, 1934, in Canton and died June 23, 2008, in Athens. She was preceded in death by her first husband Bill Butcher Sr. in 2003, brothers Bert and Truman Jobe and stepfather Wallace Abbott.
She was four years old when she moved to the Big Rock Community near Eustace. She attended Eustace public school and was an outstanding basketball player.
After graduation, she and her longtime friend Wanell Jones moved to Dallas to seek their fortune.
Her first job was in a large insurance company. Shortly thereafter, she was recommended to a small, privately-owned insurance company in Garland. She was the only office worker and learned the ins and outs of the business. She retired in 1998 as an office manager after 44 years service.
After retirement she built her dream house in Big Rock.
She married Mike Smith in 2006.
A memorial service for James Kenneth Mitchum, 41, Gun Barrel City, will be held at a later date under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank.
Mitchum was born May 4, 1967, in Houston and died June 22, 2008, in Gun Barrel City.
He was a carpenter.
Survivors include his wife Becky Mitchum, Athens; son Brent Mitchum, Gun Barrel City; mother Caroline Mitchum, Gun Barrel City; brothers Neal Brashear, Canton; Robert Mitchum, Russel Mitchum, Donnie Mitchum, all of Gun Barrel City; sister Leta Kay Mitchel, Gun Barrel City; nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.
Services for Leoata Allen, 96, Henderson, were held June 27, 2008, at the Eubank Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Mark Sanders officiating. Interment was Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank.
Allen was born Dec. 31, 1911, in Payne Springs and died June 23, 2008, in Henderson. She was preceded in death by her husband Preston Allen and sister Bertha Smith.
She was a homemaker and had resided in Mabank most of her life, and moved to Henderson in 1999. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Mabank.
Survivors include her daughter Pressley Wright and husband Maurice, Henderson; grandchildren Maranna Pruitt and husband Craig, Mt. Pleasant; and Piper Sanders and husband Mark, Forney; great-grandchildren Tyler Pruitt and Carson and Conner Sanders; and several nieces and nephews.
