Browning picks Warhawks
Monitor Staff Reports
MABANK–Incoming Mabank High School senior quarterback Kolton Browning
has verbally committed to attending the University of Louisiana at
Monroe to study business.
Browning, who was the District 13-3A football Most Valuable Player (and
the basketball MVP) as a junior, was quoted on the University of
Louisiana at Monroe website as saying the ULM campus “is where I want to
be.”
In a story by Matt Wilson posted to the ULM Warhawk website Wednesday,
Browning said “I like everything about the school. The campus was
top-notch, the dorms are brand-new, and the coaching staff here is
awesome.
“I like the fact that it has a small-town feel, and the campus is laid
out where you can walk to all your classes,” Browning added.
The ULM campus is located in Monroe, about an hour east of Shreveport,
with the campus just north of Interstate 20. Approximately 8,600
undergraduate and graduate students attend the campus, representing 44
states and 54 countries.
The university employs about 1,200 people, with 367 full-time faculty
members.
Browning, ranked 67th on the top 100 high school recruiting list,
represents the third top recruit to sign or commit to the Warhawks this
summer, Wilson wrote.
Last fall, Browning completed 238-of-409 pass attempts for just under
3,000 yards (2,996), with 26 touchdowns and 10 picks (four on one loss
to Athens), averaging 12.6 yards per completion.
Although he didn’t run during the first half of the season, he wound up
just 61 yards short of 1,000 for the season on 136 totes (a 6.9 average)
and scored 15 rushing touchdowns.
Graduation claimed Browning’s top receivers and some of the offensive
line, but if the youngsters coming up can fill those holes, the Panthers
will be an offensive force in their new 4A digs.
“I’m very excited, and so are my parents,” Browning said. “I initially
told Coach Weatherbie I would need a couple of days to think about it,
but after I toured the campus and met all the people, I told my mom and
dad this is the school for me.”
The ULM Warhawks are a NCAA Division IA school, playing in the Sun Belt
Conference with Louisiana-Lafayette, Arkansas State, North Texas, Middle
Tennessee State, Ole Miss and Florida International.
Last year, the Warhawks were the only Sun Belt team to record wins over
two bowl-bound schools. In pre-conference games this fall, the Warhawks
will face two Southeast Conference stalwarts, Auburn University and the
University of Arkansas.
Last year, the Warhawks were the only Sun Belt team to record a win over
an SEC school, defeating the University of Alabama 21-14.
