Volunteers needed to help nursing home
residents
Special to The Monitor
KAUFMANThe North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) Area Agency on
Aging Ombudsman Program has immediate need for warm-hearted volunteers to help residents
of nursing and assisted living facilities in Kaufman and Navarro counties.
Ombudsmen advocate for residents rights, including, but not limited to, dependable
and consistent care and an environment that promotes the residents dignity,
self-determination and communication.
Volunteer ombudsmen also receive and investigate complaints made by, or on behalf of,
residents or their families.
Since many residents do not receive regular visitors or have close relatives, it may be
difficult for them to enlist advocates.
Volunteer ombudsmen serve as advocates for all residents, connecting them to their broader
communities, affirming their rights and assisting them in resolving concerns.
No prior experience is required to serve as a volunteer ombudsman, but volunteers must be
at least 18 years of age and complete a free training course that consists of both
classroom study and training at local nursing homes, lasting up to 34 contact hours.
After training, volunteers serve an internship, working two to three hours per week in
their assigned facility.
Hours are flexible and are determined by each volunteer.
If you have two hours per week to make a difference in someones life, please contact
Lisa Walker, Area Agency on Aging, NCTCOG, toll-free at 1 (800) 272-3921, extension 7172,
or e-mail Pat Borgfeldt at ppborgfeldt@aol.com for more information.
NCTCOG is a voluntary association of local governments established in 1966 to assist local
governments in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit, and coordinating
for sound regional development.
NCTCOGs purpose is to strengthen both the individual and collective power of local
governments and to help them recognize regional opportunities, eliminate unnecessary
duplication, and make joint decisions.
NCTCOG serves a 16-county region of North Central Texas, which is centered around the two
urban areas of Dallas and Fort Worth.
Currently, NCTCOG has 233 member governments, including 16 counties, 165 cities, 23 school
districts and 29 special districts.
Dog training courses scheduled
Special to The Monitor
GUN BARREL CITYSummer is a great time to get out and walk the dog.
However, Rover may need some lessons so he doesnt walk you.
If Rover needs some manners or a brush up, these longer, cooler evenings are a great time
to spend an hour once a week on a behavior tuneup.
Trainer Joan Guertin will show you how the pros do it, using gentle, positive motivational
methods that are gentle on the owner and gentle on the dog.
In addition, shell throw in techniques to teach some clever tricks.
The next five-week evening sessions are scheduled for Thursday, July 8.
Those preferring a Saturday class can start July 17.
Classes will be held under shady trees or indoors for comfort while training.
Each dog enrolled must show current shot record including Rabies vaccination.
All dogs should be fitted with a fabric or leather collar and a six foot leash.
Bring soft treats or a favorite dog toy for motivation.
Cost of the five week session is $125 per dog with a portion of each enrollment going to
help support the work of Friends of the Animals, Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinics and the
building fund for the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake.
Call Guertin at (903) 887-3803 or (903) 340-7087 for advanced registration, times and
directions.

The domino effect is a chain reaction that occurs when a small
change causes a similar change nearby, which then will cause another similar change, and
so on. My name is Domino, and I got my name not only because Im black and white like
a domino tile, but also because my outgoing, cheerful personality causes my doggie
roommates to smile. This also causes our human friends to smile, which even causes the
kitties in the cat room to smile.
I am an 8-month-old male Pointer/Terrier mix. I love children, other dogs, and even get
along great with kitties. Ive had all my shots and am ready to be adopted. If
youd like to experience the domino effect, I am sure to put a forever smile on your
face when you take me to my forever home.
I currently live with a foster family, so if you would like to meet me, call my friends at
the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake at (903) 432-3422 to make an appointment. You can
also email them at dogshsccl@yahoo.com.
