Monitor Staff Reports
KAUFMAN–A chain reaction turned an attempt to pass on a two-lane highway into a deadly four car collision, resulting in one death and 10 being rushed to the hospital.
Mabank police chief Kyle McAfee and Kaufman Precinct 4 Constable Bryant Morris, working an off-duty job in the vicinity, were among the first to respond to Sunday night’s crash.
According to news reports the collisions occurred at 8:15 p.m. on State Highway 243, about one mile east of Farm-to-Market 2515 near the Ola Community of Kaufman County.
Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Cpl. Robert White told news agencies that the driver of a Cadillac Escalade was westbound on SH 243 approaching a rise when he attempted to pass a 2007 Chevy Silverado in front of him and struck an eastbound Ford pickup head on.
The driver of the Chevy stopped to help, his vehicle contained five other passengers, according to a news report the following morning.
