Mabank notches state 7-on-7
tournament berth
Monitor Staff Reports
MABANK–The Mabank Panther 7-on-7 team is heading to the
state tournament after winning its pool competition last weekend in
Tyler.
The Panthers went 2-1 in pool play at the State 7-on-7 Qualifying
Tournament, held at the Pat Hartley Soccer Complex on the Tyler Junior
College campus.
Mabank will open state tournament play Thursday, July 12, at Texas A&M
University’s intermural fields in College Station.
Joining the Panthers in the 32-team small-school (3A-1A) division will
be two District 14-3A teams, the Canton Eagles and the Athens Hornets,
along with the District 19-2A Elysian Fields Yellowjackets.
Canton and Athens went undefeated in pool play during the qualifying
tournament. The Eagles finished the tournament unbeaten at 5-0, edging
the Hornets 30-24 to take the overall championship.
Mabank opened pool play with a 34-19 win over 14-3A contender Bullard,
then crushed the Eastland Mavericks from District 10-2A in Central Texas
39-13.
Canton opened with a dominating 41-18 win over Oakwood, then crushed
Sabine 55-20 before winding up pool play with a 28-13 win over
Beckville.
In a matchup of pool winners, Canton defeated Mabank 40-20, while Athens
nipped Elysian Fields 27-26.
The Eagles opened a 27-7 lead over the Panthers in their semifinal
match, but the Panthers (behind lefty junior quarterback Kolton
Browning) cut the deficit to 27-20 in the second half before the Eagles
put up two late scores to ice the win.
This will be Canton’s third straight trip to the state 7-on-7
tournament, while the Panthers will be making their second appearance
since head coach Jimmy Cantrell took over the program four years ago.
