Monitor Staff Reports
COLLEGE STATION–The Mabank Panthers had a great run through the state 7-on-7 football tournament last week, advancing to the semifinals.
Mabank’s team has advanced to the state 7-on-7 tournament two of the last three years.
For the first time in its 10-year history, this year’s FSN Southwest 7-on-7 tournament had two brackets, for large (4A-5A) and small (3A-1A) schools.
Mabank opened play July 12 in Pool C, along with Gonzales (District 29-3A), Melissa (District 13-2A) and West (District 12-3A).
The Panthers went 2-1 in pool play, defeating Gonzales 41-27 and West 55-48, and losing to Melissa, 34-27.
Both Mabank and Melissa finished at 2-1, but the Panthers were awarded the top seed on point differential.
In the first round of single-elimination tournament play, the Panthers crushed District 19-3A Madisonville 54-19 to set up a Round of 16 rematch against Canton.
Canton defeated Hardin to advance to the second-round matchup against Mabank.
The Panthers defeated the Eagles 46-26 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Mabank edged past District 27-3A Pleasanton 49-48 in the quarterfinals, setting up a semifinal match against District 7-2A Crane.
In the semifinals, Crane’s Golden Cranes squeaked past the Panthers 51-49 in double overtime.
Mabank’s Haydon Blair was named to the All-Tournament team.
Another District 14-3A team, Athens, was disqualified from the tournament during pool play when a fight erupted at the end of their 32-27 win over Bridgeport.
Both teams were ousted, and will not be eligible to participate in next year’s state tournament.
