Don Legg Open attracts 20 teams
Monitor Staff Reports
KEMP–Twenty teams took part in the annual Don Legg Open golf tournament
at the Cedar Creek Country Club Monday.
“This is the biggest turnout we’ve had in a long time,” Kemp Athletic
Boosters president Robert Emfinger noted.
Named after Legg, who reported Kemp activities and athletics for The
Monitor for decades, the annual tournament raises funds for the Kemp
athletic department.
More than 50 sponsors provided prizes and auction items for the
tournament.
Items auctioned included Rangers baseball tickets, rounds of golf at the
Stonebrier Country Club in Frisco, FC Dallas pro soccer tickets and
tickets to Medieval Times in Dallas.
Major sponsors included the Kemp Family Pharmacy, the Kemp Sonic
Drive-In, Sports City Cafe in Mesquite, KLTY radio and Trinity Valley
Electric Co-op.
The team of Shawn McNeely, Jack Scroggins, Rey Coloma and Joe Scroggins,
sponsored by Teague Chevrolet in Mabank, took home first place trophies
and cash prizes.
Second place in the four-man scramble tournament went to the team of
Boyse Wood, Andy Taylor, Jeff Van Horn and Raymond Shackelford.
Third place went to the team of Brandon Smith, John Rouse, Mike Watson
and M.C. Yocham.
Chip Chambers won the “closest to the pin” contest, while the “longest
drive” prizes went to Kemp School Superintendent Dr. Peter Running and
Donna Schumacher.
