Hibbs wins
top honors at SMU
Monitor Staff Reports
DALLAS–Kemp High School incoming senior Mandy Hibbs
received the “Top All-American” award at the National Cheerleaders
Association cheer camp at Southern Methodist University July 12-15.
The “Top All-American” award is given to only one cheerleader at the
800-member SMU camp, and qualifies Hibbs, the captain of the KHS varsity
cheer squad, to attend either the Fed-Ex Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla., or
the Thanksgiving in Paradise in Honolulu.
Hibbs was also invited to try out for the NCA staff, which would include
conducting similar camps and judging cheer competitions across the
country.
The KHS varsity squad won “Top Team” in the Small Varsity division at
the SMU camp, and Hibbs also won the “Captains/Leadership Award.”
Kemp cheerleaders were all nominated as NCA All-American candidates.
Varsity team members include Hibbs, Meagan Lacy, Ashley Chandler, Alicia
Jones, Jessica Baker, Jamie Randau, Alyssa Jermigar, Hillary Ables,
Kandyce Haynie, Stephanie Rogers and mascot Heather Beauchamp.
In addition, Kemp junior varsity cheerleader Hailey Hall was also named
to the All-American team.
A three-time All-American team member, Hibbs has been cheering/tumbling
since age 4, and competitively cheers for the Arlington-based Spirit of
Texas, where she is a member of their Small Co-Ed Level 5 team.
She trains twice weekly (minimum four hours), and has competed at the
USASF World Competition, earning a silver medal and meeting other
competitors from around the world.
