Football workouts commence
Monitor Staff Reports
CEDAR CREEK LAKE–Football players turned out early Monday for the start
of two-a-day practices.
With the entire area under an excessive heat warning – and little to no
break forecast from tropical storm Eduoard, which came onshore near
Galveston Tuesday morning – coaches were careful to keep players
drinking lots of water and wind up workouts at or before noon.
Numbers were down slightly at Eustace, but right at expectations in
Mabank and Kemp.
“We have 65 out,” Eustace head coach Doug Wendel reported. “We’re down
about 25, but we graduated a big class last year, so we anticipated a
little drop.”
The players who participated in the summer workout sessions reported in
“fantastic” shape, Wendel added.
“I’m thrilled to death with the (players’) attitude, and the improvement
they’re showing from one practice to the next,” he said. “Our offensive
line practice today (Tuesday) is the best I’ve seen since I’ve been
here.”
Mabank head coach Jimmy Cantrell said around 150 players turned out for
opening practices, with a few more freshmen expected to show later.
“The kids came in in good shape, for the most part,” Cantrell said.
“They’ve showed good retention, remembering a lot from last spring,” he
added.
At Kemp, around 75 players reported on the first day, with some others
expected to report in the next few days, head coach Greg Anderson
reported.
“One of our goals this year is to field three teams, with a full
freshman and junior varsity schedule,” Anderson said.
“The most impressive thing so far is when we ran our 110s,” Anderson
added. “Everyone completed the runs. The overall conditioning is much
better than I anticipated.”
All three teams are scheduled to play early-morning scrimmages Saturday,
Aug. 16, with Mabank traveling to Mineola and Eustace hosting Venus.
Kemp will scrimmage Edgewood, most likely at Edgewood, but that had not
been finalized as of Monday.
Each team will have a second scrimmage Thursday, Aug. 21, with Mabank
visiting Canton and Eustace visiting Elkhart.
Kemp will face Malakoff, but a site had not been determined as of
Monday.
Eustace will open the season on the road Thursday, Aug. 28, when they
travel to Tyler to face Grace Community.
Mabank and Kemp will open the season at home Friday, Aug. 29, as Kemp
will host Brownsboro and Mabank will host Kaufman.
