Texas Travelers win world
title

PLANO–The Texas Travelers softball team, featuring players from the
North Texas area, went 7-0 to win the 18-under USSSA Fastpitch World
Series in Plano Aug. 4-8.
Seven girls on the Texas Travelers team were named to the all-tournament
team, and coaches Les Jones and Jana Deen (both of Wills Point) were
named the all-tournament coaches.
Mabank High School senior Brandie Lander was named the MVP pitcher in
the tournament, which drew teams from across the nation.
Joining Lander in receiving MVP honors was Forney High School junior
Macie Tillery (MVP offense) and Wylie High School junior Jill Jordan
(MVP player).
Named to the all-world team were Forney sophomore Laura Mabary, Wylie
senior Sierra Holley, Mesquite High junior Samantha Reynoso and Frisco
senior Erin McLeod.
All-tournament nominations were noted for Wills Point junior Brooke
Jones and Van junior Dara Hendon.

sweep Ennis, Athens

EUSTACE–The hosting Eustace Lady Bulldogs defeated both Ennis and Athens
in a dual match Tuesday.
Now 8-2 on the season, the Lady Bulldogs hosted 24 teams – including
district foe Kemp and Mabank – in their own invitational tournament this
weekend, opening play Thursday.
Tuesday, Aug. 25, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Ennis for a rematch
against the Lady Lions and the Lady Hornets, opening with 4:30 p.m.
sub-varsity contests.
Next weekend, Aug. 27-29, Eustace will play in the Tyler Invitational
tournament at John Tyler High School before returning home to host the
Edgewood Lady Bulldogs Friday, Sept. 4.
In the opening match of the evening, the Lady Bulldogs took out the Lady
Lions 4-0, winning 25-20, 25-20, 25-8 and 28-26.
Senior Jenny McConathy led the Eustace girls with 20 kills, four blocks,
one dig, one assist and an amazing 11 serving aces.
Catania Grant and Harmony Allen also dominated at the net, collecting 13
kills between them, two digs each, three blocks (Allen two) and two aces
each, while Grant added an assist.
Allison Cass had one kill, two digs, two blocks and three aces, while
Vanessa Lopez added one kill, one dig and one block.
Aurora Beasley had nine assists and three aces, while Kimberly Austin
had five assists and one ace.
Ennis then lost 3-1 to Athens in a lengthy contest, winning the first
two games by identical 25-20 scores, but dropping the third game 25-18.
Athens won the fourth game, again by 25-20.
After the lengthy match, the well-rested Lady Bulldogs swept the Lady
Hornets.
Although Athens opened an early 6-0 lead in the first game, the Lady
Bulldogs refocused and tied the score at 12-12, eventually outlasting
Athens 27-25.
In the second game, Eustace won 25-21, and then blew out the Lady
Hornets in the third game, 25-14.
Grant, Cass, McConathy and Allen all dominated the net for the Lady
Bulldogs against Athens, racking up 65 kills and eight blocks in the
match.
McConathy had 21 kills to lead the onslaught, along with four blocks,
four digs, one assist and two aces.
Allen and Cass both had 15 kills each. Allen had 22 digs, one block, two
assists and one ace, while Cass had 15 digs and three aces.
Grant finished with 14 kills, three blocks, four assists, 11 digs and
two aces.
Austin had 62 assists in the match, along with three kills, while
Beasley added seven assists and one ace.
Lopez had eight kills and one assist, while Kelsey Maltos had one kill
and one dig.
Lady Panthers fall to
Crandall

CRANDALL–The
Mabank Lady Panthers dropped a hard-fought non-district volleyball match
to the hosting Crandall Lady Pirates Tuesday, 3-1.

Now 4-6 on the season, the Lady Panthers were scheduled to be one of
24 teams playing in the Eustace Invitational tournament this weekend,
opening pool play against Palestine, Alba-Golden and Malakoff.
Tuesday, Aug. 25, the Lady Panthers will host Greenville and Caddo Mills
in a dual match, opening with 5 p.m. sub-varsity contests.
Next weekend, Aug. 27-29, Mabank’s girls will play in the Tyler
Invitational tournament at John Tyler High School, and will return home
to host John Tyler and Van in a dual meet Tuesday, Sept. 1, opening with
4:30 p.m. sub-varsity matches.
At Crandall Tuesday, the Lady Panthers opened the contest with a 25-19
win over the Lady Pirates, but then dropped the next three games, 26-24,
25-20 and 25-18.
“We had good play, but not good enough to win the match,” veteran coach
Stacy Shelton said later.
“The girls are playing hard and well. We played with our setter out, and
that hurt us,” Shelton added. “However, Jena Penney stepped up and
played that position very well.”
Penney notched 38 assists in the match, along with two digs.
Junior Torrie Garrett and senior Alison Castle led the Mabank offense,
notching 12 and 15 kills, respectively.
Garret also had three blocks and two digs, while Castle added three
digs.
Meagan Royal had four kills, three blocks and a dig, while Lauren
Norwood had eight kills and 10 digs.
Maegan Olivarez had two kills and two blocks, along with an assist.
On defense, Taylor Chapa had six digs, Sadie Roberts had 10 digs, one
save and one serving ace, while Shaylee Williams also had six digs.
