Monitor Staff Reports
MABANK–Using strong net play and good defense, the Mabank Lady Panthers
drilled the visiting Greenville Lady Lions 3-0 in a non-district
volleyball match Tuesday.
Now at 9-9 on the season, the Mabank Lady Panthers were scheduled to
play this weekend in the Tyler Invitational tournament at John Tyler
High School, and will again travel to Tyler Tuesday, Sept. 4, for a dual
match against John Tyler and Carthage.
After a weekend break, the Lady Panthers will host Palestine Westwood
Tuesday, Sept. 11, opening with 5 p.m. sub-varsity matches. Friday,
Sept. 14, Mabank will host the Royse City Lady Bulldogs for a
non-district match, opening with 4:30 p.m. sub-varsity matches.
Against Greenville, the Lady Panthers showed few of the nagging problems
they have seen in past matches, and their crisp, team-oriented play
showed in the final scores – 25-13, 25-14 and 25-17.
“The girls played well,” Mabank coach Stacy Shelton said later.

to block a shot by Athens Lady Hornet Allison Sanders (7) as teammate
Caty DiBari (2) watches during an Aug. 21 non-district volleyball match
in Eustace.
At Athens Tuesday, the Lady Hornets and
Lady Bulldogs, who had already played each other twice, showed
playoff-level intensity during a 90-minute marathon match.
Tuesday’s win was the third straight over Eustace for 12-2 Athens, who
defeated the Lady Bulldogs in a dual match Aug. 21 and again last
weekend to win the Eustace tournament championship.
Eustace, of course, is coached by Chuck Powers, now in his 31st season
and seeking his 600th career win, while Athens is coached by one of
Powers’ former players, Natosha Spain.
“(This was) a pretty good match between two good teams, and a good match
to watch,” Powers said later. “We just didn’t finish.”
Eustace took the first game 25-22, but Athens came back to take the next
two games by identical 25-19 scores.
The Lady Bulldogs forced a fifth game with a dramatic 27-25 win in the
fourth game.
In a nail-biting finale, the Lady Hornets opened a 12-4 lead before
Eustace mounted a comeback with seven straight points, tying the match
at 12.
The match remained tied at 14 and at 15 before the Lady Hornets scored
two straight points to win 17-15.
Caty DiBari led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 25 points on five
kills, two blocks and 16 assists.
Jenny McConathy led Eustace at the net with eight kills, seven blocks
and one assist, while Cassie Freeman had 16 kills and two blocks.
Defensively, Nicole McNeel had 12 blocks, Bekah Walter had 10 blocks and
Camille Rogers had three blocks.
