Mabank Lady Panther Shelby Swain (2) returns a hit from the John Tyler Lady Lions during the Lady Panthers' 3-1 loss to the visiting Lady Lions Tuesday. Swain and some other junior varsity players were recently elevated to the varsity ranks.

While the Lady Lions were taller and clearly more athletic, it was the Lady Panthers who were their own worst enemy, committing numerous unforced errors in the first game, a 25-5 shellacking.
The Lady Panthers bounced back to make a match of it, winning the second game 25-18, but the Lady Lions kept the pressure on, winning the third game 25-22 and icing the contest with a 25-11 win in the fourth game.

Edgewood sweeps EHS Lady Bulldogs
Monitor Staff Reports
EDGEWOOD–In a battle of Lady Bulldogs, Edgewood swept visiting Eustace 3-0 Tuesday in a matchup of probable district contenders.
Eustace was scheduled to visit former district foe Van Friday night, before returning home Tuesday, Sept. 7, to host Mabank and Palestine Westwood in a dual match.
Another home-court dual match is scheduled to follow Friday, Sept. 10, with a rematch against Edgewood and Athens.
Eustace’s girls will open District 6-2A play at home Tuesday, Sept. 14, against the Mildred Lady Eagles, and will travel to Buffalo for a second loop contest Friday, Sept. 17.
At Edgewood, the hosting Lady Bulldogs opened with a 25-20 win, but the second game went long, with Edgewood eventually prevailing 26-24.
Edgewood took the third game 25-14 to ice the match.
Edgewood also won the junior varsity match, while Eustace won the freshman contest.
(Editor’s note: Lack of space in Thursday’s issue forced the deletion of most of the Eustace girls’ results at the Tyler Invitational tournament. Those results are included below.)
At Tyler Aug. 26, the Lady Bulldogs went 3-1 in pool play, defeating Carthage, Marshall and Longview, and losing to White Oak.
The Lady Bulldogs swept Carthage 25-15 and 25-18 in the pool opener, but fell to perennial 2A power White Oak 25-10 and 25-14.
Eustace bounced back to sweep Marshall, 25-13 and 25-14, but went the distance against Longview, winning the first game 25-14 but dropping the second game 25-20.
The Lady Bulldogs knocked off the Lady Lobos 25-20 in the third game to take the match.
In bracket play Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs were swept by Canyon Creek, 25-21 and 25-19.
In the semifinals, Eustace took John Tyler to three games, winning the first 25-19 before the Lady Lions rallied to take the second game 25-17 and the third game 25-22.
