Spirit Week golf tourney set

KEMP–The third annual Spirit of Charity Golf Tournament
is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 24, at Cedar Creek Country Club.
All proceeds from the event, hosted in conjunction with Mabank
Independent School District’s annual Spirit Week fund-raiser, will
benefit Habitat for Humanity of Cedar Creek.
The four-man scramble tournament will kick off at 11:30 a.m. when the
driving range opens. A hamburger lunch will begin at 11:45 a.m. and
tournament play will start at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start.
Entry fee for the tournament is $50 per person, which includes lunch,
golf cart, tournament play and tee prizes.
The deadline to enter is Monday, Sept. 17. Entry forms are available in
the Mabank High School office, through Tournament Coordinator Cris Cary
or at the Pro Shop at Cedar Creek Country Club.
“I’m very excited to be involved in the golf tournament this year, and I
am hoping to have a full field of golfers participate,” Cary said. “This
is a great opportunity to give back to the community.”

EUSTACE–Eustace’s Lady Bulldogs took a 3-0 non-district volleyball win
over the visiting Caddo Mills Lady Foxes Tuesday.
Now 12-7 on the season, the Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to visit Wills
Point Friday for a dual match with the hosting Lady Tigers and the Grand
Saline Lady Indians.
Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Eustace girls have an open date, and will travel
to Canton Friday, Sept. 14, with a 4:30 p.m. freshman contest opening a
three-match slate.
Another open date is scheduled Tuesday, Sept. 18, before the Lady
Bulldogs open District 13-3A play on the road against Kaufman.
Tuesday’s match was scheduled to be against the Como-Pickton Lady
Eagles, but the District 12-2A Lady Foxes provided a good test before
losing 25-19, 25-17 and 25-16.
“It was a good effort against a young, but up-and-coming team,” veteran
Eustace coach Chuck Powers reported.
Cassie Freeman led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points on nine kills and
eight digs, while Jenny McConathy posted a strong all-around game with
eight kills, three digs and three blocks.
Chelsea Truitt had nine points on three kills and three digs, while Cati
DiBari notched 16 assists and Ashley Houston had six digs.
Nicole McNeel also had a good setting match, racking up 17 assists,
while Bekah Walter had three blocks.
Jessica McConathy had one kill and six digs, while Camille Rogers added
four kills and two blocks and Brisha Ward scored four points.
In sub-varsity action, the Eustace girls took both the junior varsity
and freshman matches.
The Eustace JV won 25-17 and 25-13, while the Lady Bulldog freshmen won
25-9 and 25-20.

Bull-riding benefit

CORSICANA–Foxfire Arena in Corsicana will host
a special benefit bull-riding contest for Kirby Jackson Saturday, Sept.
29.
Matt Austin, the 2005 PRCA bull riding champion and Texas Rodeo Cowboy
Hall of Fame inductee Sandy Kirby will serve as judges for the
fund-raising event.
Books will open from 6-9 p.m. Sunday and Monday, Sept. 9-10. Entry fee
is $75, with the first 40 paid entries to ride. Sponsors have provided
an additional $1,000 to the jackpot.
