Volunteers
needed to help nursing home residents
Special to The Monitor
NORTH CENTRAL TEXASThe North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG)
Area Agency on Aging Ombudsman Program has immediate need for warm-hearted volunteers to
help residents of nursing and assisted living facilities throughout North Texas including
Kaufman, Kemp, Mabank and Terrell.
Ombudsmen advocate for residents rights including, but not limited to, dependable
and consistent care and an environment that promotes the residents dignity,
self-determination and communication.
Volunteer Ombudsmen also receive and investigate complaints made by, or on behalf of,
residents or their families.
Since many residents do not receive regular visitors or have close relatives, it may be
difficult for them to enlist advocates. Volunteer Ombudsmen serve as advocates for all
residents, connecting them to their broader communities, affirming their rights and
assisting them in resolving concerns.
No prior experience is required to serve as a volunteer ombudsman, but volunteers must be
at least 18 years of age and complete a free training course that consists of both
classroom study and training at local nursing homes, lasting up to 34 contact hours.
After training, volunteers serve an internship, working two to three hours per week in
their assigned facility. Hours are flexible and are determined by each volunteer.
If you have two hours per week to make a difference in someones life, please contact
Lisa Walker, Area Agency on Aging, NCTCOG, at 1 (800) 272-3921 extension 7172, or e-mail
Pat Borgfeldt at ppborgfeldt@aol.com for
more information.
NCTCOG is a voluntary association of local governments established in 1966 to assist local
governments in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit, and coordinating
for sound regional development. NCTCOGs purpose is to strengthen both the individual
and collective power of local governments and to help them recognize regional
opportunities, eliminate unnecessary duplication and make joint decisions.
NCTGOG serves a 16-county region of North Central Texas, which is centered around the two
urban areas of Dallas and Fort Worth.
Currently, NCTCOG has 233 member governments, including 16 counties, 165 cities, 23 school
districts and 29 special districts.
Laser therapy unveiled at local
animal clinic
Special to The Monitor
GUN BARREL CITYLakeside Animal Clinic at 2407 W. Main, in Gun Barrel City, announces
the immediate offering of laser therapy to pet owners in the surrounding area.
The addition is part of Lakeside Animal Clinics continued investment in advanced
technologies and progressive procedures in veterinary medicine.
Lasers have been used in human medicine for more than 30 years, but are just beginning to
appear in the veterinary field as doctors and animal lovers learn more about the benefits
they can provide.
Research indicates that the family pet is increasingly treated as a member of the family,
and maintaining a quality of life for that pet is very important to the owner.
Dr. Damon Stephen, owner of Lakeside Animal Clinic for more than 30 years, has seen the
ongoing evolution of the human-animal bond.
More and more, our clients are demanding the highest levels of care for their
pets, Stephen said.
Laser therapy provides us with an opportunity to meet the needs of our patients, and
offer the highest levels of care possible, he added.
Laser therapy has several benefits over traditional pain and mobility treatments,
including very rapid disappearance of pain, even that of neuralgic origin.
During the therapy, the patented delivery system synchronizes energy frequencies
delivering superior results in less time.
The versatility of the laser allows a doctor to treat sore muscles and joints,
degenerative joint conditions, neurological pain and chronic non-healing wounds, as well
as anti-inflammatory conditions.
We pride ourselves on staying on the leading edge of technology and medicine, and
educating our clients on the various levels of care available. Laser therapy is the future
of veterinary medicine and we feel our clients deserve to have that option when choosing
the best care for their pet, Dr. Jim Collinsworth said.
For additional information about laser therapy, contact the staff at Lakeside Animal
Clinic at (903) 887-7486.

The domino effect is a chain reaction that occurs when a small
change causes a similar change nearby, which then will cause another similar change, and
so on. My name is Domino, and I got my name not only because Im black and white like
a domino tile, but also because my outgoing, cheerful personality causes my doggie
roommates to smile. This also causes our human friends to smile, which even causes the
kitties in the cat room to smile.
I am an 8-month-old male Pointer/Terrier mix. I love children, other dogs, and even get
along great with kitties. Ive had all my shots and am ready to be adopted. If
youd like to experience the domino effect, I am sure to put a forever smile on your
face when you take me to my forever home.
I currently live with a foster family, so if you would like to meet me, call my friends at
the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake at (903) 432-3422 to make an appointment. You can
also email them at dogshsccl@yahoo.com.
