Mabank Middle
School art classes begin with a line
Special to The Monitor
MABANK–Nancy Borden’s art classes at Mabank Middle School
have begun the year exploring the art elements of design.
The first element they are focusing on is the element of line.
The Art 2 class found a unique way to use line in their art project.
By using maps as a guide, they took a viewfinder to look for an
interesting composition of lines in the map.
When they were satisfied with the composition they had found, they
enlarged the design onto cardboard.
They then traced the lines with glue and attached yarn to make the lines
stand out. They covered the yarn with tissue paper and glue to create
texture and a surface to paint on.
They finished their designs with metallic acrylic paint. The results
were stunning.
The sixth grade art class used line to create a map.
They are studying maps in social studies, so Borden and Coach Duncan
decided to combine projects.
The students drew a map that showed how they could reach their home from
Middle School.
They included a compass rose to show the correct directions and a legend
to highlight the different landmarks. They added an artistic touch by
adding pictures of area landmarks.
Art 1 classes are drawing designs that use a large variety of lines as
their emphasis for their design.
One of the projects is titled “Bad Hair Day,” in which they draw a
person whose hair is a composition of different types and variety of
lines. Some students had hidden pictures in the hair to add a humorous
touch.
In the coming weeks, all classes will be exploring how to create optical
illusions by using line and shape.
A few of these projects can be seen in the Middle School Office.
Many more may be on display in time for the school’s open house 6-8 p.m.
Thursday, (today) Sept. 20.
