Poteet pops Lady Panthers
Monitor Staff Reports
MESQUITE–Mabank’s Lady Panthers fell to the hosting Mesquite Poteet Lady
Pirates 3-0 Tuesday.
Now 9-16 on the season and 2-2 in District 15-4A volleyball play, the
Lady Panthers were scheduled to have a district bye Friday.
Mabank’s girls will resume district play at home Tuesday, Sept. 30,
against the Forney Lady Jackrabbits, opening with 5:30 p.m. sub-varsity
matches.
Friday, Oct. 3, the Lady Panthers will host the Terrell Lady Tigers in
the final first-round match of district play, again opening with 5:30
p.m. sub-varsity contests.
Mabank will open the second round of district action with two straight
road matches, at Lancaster Tuesday, Oct. 7, and at fourth-ranked Red Oak
Friday, Oct. 10.
Poteet’s Lady Pirates dominated the Lady Panthers, winning 25-7, 25-14
and 25-14.
“We had very little offense in the match. None of our hitters could come
through,” veteran Mabank coach Stacy Shelton reported. “Our serve
receive has greatly improved, but our hitters need to come through in
big games like this.”
Seven different Lady Panthers scored kills in the match, led by Alison
Castle with six and Torrie Garrett with four.
Melody Cook had two kills and one block, while Allyson Butler had one
kill, two digs and one save.
Senior Erica Umana had one kill, six digs, one saves and 14 assists,
while Hayley Spurgeon added four digs and one assist.
Senior Lauren Hamilton added one kill and four digs, while Taylor Chapa
had one dig.
Lauren Norwood had one kill and six digs, and Shaylee Williams added
three digs.
“Terrell, Forney and us are pretty much fighting for the third and
fourth place (playoff) spots right now. We play both of those schools
next week. Those matches will tell a lot about the strength of this
Mabank team,” Shelton said. “We need to take care of both of these
teams. We have the ability – we just need to execute.”
’09 ShareLunker season opens Oct. 1
Monitor Staff Reports
ATHENS–The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will begin accepting
entries into the Budweiser ShareLunker program Wednesday, Oct. 1.
Anyone legally catching a 13-pound or bigger largemouth bass from Texas
waters – public or private – between Oct. 1 and April 30 may submit the
fish to the Budweiser ShareLunker program by calling program manager
David Campbell at (903) 681-0550, or paging him toll-free at (888)
784-0600 and leaving a phone number, including area code.
Qualifying fish will be picked up by TPWD personnel within 12 hours.
The fish are used in a selective breeding program at the Texas
Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) in Athens.
Some of the offspring from these fish are stocked back into the water
body from which they were caught. Other ShareLunker offspring are
stocked in public waters around the state, in an attempt to increase the
overall size and growth rate of largemouth bass in Texas.
Anglers entering fish into the ShareLunker program will receive a free
replica of their fish, a certificate and ShareLunker clothing, and be
recognized at a banquet at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in
Athens June 6, 2009.
In addition, if a Texas angler catches the largest entry of the year,
that person will receive a lifetime fishing license.
For complete information and rules of the ShareLunker program, tips on
caring for big bass and a recap of last year’s season, see
www.tpwd.state.tx.-us/ShareLunker.
The site also includes a searchable database of all fish entered into
the program, along with pictures where available.
The Budweiser ShareLunker program is made possible through support from
Anheuser-Busch, Inc. Since 1991, Anheuser-Busch, in partnership with the
Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, has contributed millions of dollars
in funding to support conservation causes and fishing, hunting and
outdoor recreation programs in Texas.
