    As I Was Saying

Mysteries of Medicine ...
Well, the time has come when I'm takin' so many pills it's a wonder I don't rattle when I walk.
And maybe I do. Na', I don't or I would have already been told; the way folks 'round here tend to my business.
You know, I got to thinkin' how in the sam hill do the pills I swallow get to the right place.
Now, think about it. How do they make their way to where the hurtin's at?
What if one goes the wrong way and causes somethin' to happen that's not supposed to?
I kept on frettin' to myself 'bout all of this, so I made a visit to the doctor's office. I told him I sure needed to ask a question or two.
He told me, in his nicest voice, "I'll be more than happy to answer any question you have."
So I said, "When I swallow a pill how does it know the place I'm needin' it to go?" He said, "Beats me."
Well, I had to admit it was an answer, but it wasn't much help.
So I decided to ask this friend of mine, who has an answer for just about everything. I told her what was puzzlin' me and she said, "Let me give it some thought."
Not long afterwards I got the following:
Little Pill
Little Pill, here in my hand,
I wonder how you understand
Just what to do or where to go,
To stop the ache that hurts me so?
Within your covering lies relief;
You work alone in unbelief.
Down my throat you quickly go,
And sink in regions there below.
But what I wonder, Little Pill,
How do you know where I am ill?
And just how do you really know
Just where you are supposed to go?
I've got a headache, that is true,
My broken ribs need attention, too,
So how can anything so small
End my aches in no time at all?
Do you work alone or hire a crew
To do the good things that you do?
I'm counting on you very strong
To get in there where you belong.
Don't let me down and please don't shirk,
But do your undercover work;
Go down my throat and on your way
And end my aches another day.
Don't make a wrong turn is my plea,
'Cause I can't take another pill till three.

As I was saying, she had an answer; but I'm still frettin' about "How?"
But she did give it some thought and that's always a help.
