  Flyers edge ’Dogs

EUSTACE–A slight scoring edge in the middle two quarters gave the visiting LaPoynor Flyers a 59-51 win over the Eustace Bulldogs Tuesday.
The Bulldogs were scheduled to open play in the Great East Texas Shoot-Out basketball tournament in Brownsboro against Gladewater Thursday morning.

Tuesday, Dec. 11, the Bulldogs will host the Scurry-Rosser Wildcats, with a 5 p.m. sub-varsity contest opening the evening’s slate.
Friday, Dec. 14, the Bulldogs will host the Edgewood Bulldogs in a non-district matchup, opening with a 4:30 p.m. sub-varsity contest.
Next Monday, Dec. 17, Eustace will travel to Grand Saline, and Friday, Dec. 21, the Bulldogs will host Brownsboro, opening with 4:30 p.m. sub-varsity games each evening.
Against LaPoynor, the Bulldogs opened an early lead, 14-12, but the Flyers came back to take a two-point halftime edge, 30-28.
In the third quarter, the Flyers outscored the Bulldogs 14-9 to take a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter, 44-37.
In the final stanza, the Flyers edged the Bulldogs 15-14 to forge the eight-point win, despite the Bulldogs’ long-range shooting effort – six 3-point baskets in the contest.
Russell Templeton led the Bulldogs with 17 points, as Jacob Horton hit four 3-point baskets to total 12 points.
David Graves added seven points (including a trey), Frankie Lopez seven, Zach Keeling six (including a trey) and David Key scored two points.
LaPoynor’s 6-6 forward Josh Saunders led the Flyers with 19 points, as Jarrell Fuller added 17 points and E.J. Henderson added 11.

Comets get to quarterfinals

WACO–The Tri-County Soccer Association’s Comets U19 girls soccer team won their bracket and finished in fifth place at the annual state soccer tournament at Waco Dec. 1-2.
In opening-round play, the Comets defeated Lewisville 2-1, and then knocked off Wichita Falls 3-0, followed by hosting Waco, 1-0.
In the quarterfinals Sunday, the Comets played to a 1-1 tie with the Plano Cheetahs in regulation. In a five-player shoot-out, the Cheetahs missed one goal, while the Comets missed two, enabling the Cheetahs to advance.
“For a team in an association as small as ours, this was a major accomplishment by this special group of ladies,” retiring coach Bruce Tower reported.
“We aren’t from a 5A school, yet we play against player who play for 5A schools,” he added. “I am so very proud of what the Comets did this season. We have memories for a lifetime!”
Scoring goals for the Comets during the tournament were Nikki McWhorter, Hilary Noble, Jessica Skirko, Arin Rhodes and Ashleigh Wood. Goalie Adrienne “Red” Rhodes allowed just two goals in regulation play during four games at the tournament.

LaPoynor girls fly by Eustace

EUSTACE–After a slow start, the LaPoynor Lady Flyers turned up the defensive pressure in the second half to crush the hosting Eustace Lady Bulldogs 50-21 Tuesday.
The Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to play in the Great East Texas Shoot-Out basketball tournament in Brownsboro this weekend.
Next weekend, Dec. 13-15, the Lady Bulldogs will play in the Grand Saline Lady Indian Invitational tournament.
Eustace will return home for back-to-back games Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 17-18, hosting Cross Roads and Van. Both evenings open with 5 p.m. sub-varsity contests.

Following a Christmas break, the Lady Bulldogs will host Palestine Westwood Thursday, Dec. 27, with a 2 p.m. freshman contest opening a three-game slate.
Friday, Dec. 28, Eustace will travel to Cross Roads, again opening with a 2 p.m. junior varsity game.
LaPoynor entered Tuesday’s non-district contest ranked 12th in the state in Class A.
Neither team could find their shooting touch early, as the Lady Flyers opened a 3-2 lead in the first quarter.
LaPoynor outscored the Lady Bulldogs 12-7 in the second quarter to take a 15-9 halftime lead, despite two baskets from Lady Bulldog Ashlie Phillips.
Defensive pressure by the Lady Flyers began to pay off in the second half, as LaPoynor outscored the Lady Bulldogs 12-8 in the third quarter before posting a game-breaking 23-4 run in the fourth period.
Eustace got two 3-point baskets from Cassie Freeman, but one of her two long-range buckets (and a free throw) were all the Lady Bulldogs could muster in the final stanza, while seven different Lady Flyers scored during the period.
Freeman led the Lady Bulldogs with nine points, as Ashlie Phillips scored six.
Both Ashley Watkins and Brisha Ward scored two points each for the Lady Bulldogs, while Jessica McConathy and Amber Perkins chipped in free throws.
Jaime Manis led the Lady Flyers with eight points, while Jessica Field, Chelsea Reynolds and Kaela Spencer all scored seven points each.
