MHS choirs
slate Christmas program
Special to The Monitor
MABANK–The Mabank High School Choral Department will be
presenting their annual concert titled, “An Evening in December” at 7
p.m. Thursday (tonight) at the new high school auditorium. The concert
is free.
Several choirs will be singing old favorites as well as new songs – and
will form a 100-voice choir at the end to sing several songs.
Highlights will include the Junior Varsity Chorale singing “Hanukkah
Wish” and “Masters in this Hall,” Panther Edition singing and dancing to
“You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” and the classic “Have Yourself a Merry
Little Christmas” – with the Varsity Chorale singing “Mary, Did you
Know?” and Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus,” as well as many others.
There will also be a sing-along of Christmas carols, and all choirs will
end the concert with “Gracious Spirit, Dwell With Me.”
This evening will be an extraordinary way to get into the Christmas
spirit and to reflect on the joys and meaning of the season. This one’s
shaping up to be the best one yet! We hope to see you there!
Brookshire’s food drive in
final weeks
Special to The Monitor
MABANK–Donations to the 26th annual Spirit of Christmas
Food Drive are still being accepted as the drive moves into its final
weeks.
The goal is to feed 13,000 families in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and
Mississippi.
The food drive is sponsored by Brookshire Grocery Company and various
service organizations, including the Chandler Lions Club.
“Many families receive assistance through this effort, and every single
donation counts,” director of public relations for BGC Sam Anderson
said.
Donations may be made by placing non-perishable food items in designated
bins inside participating stores before Christmas.
Items needed include canned meats, vegetables, soups, beans, rice and
pasta.
Brookshire’s will give at least one baking hen to each family assisted
by the drive.
In 2006, the company provided more than 15,000 hens. Food drive
officials expect to provide the same or more this year.
The Chandler Lions Club will gather, sort, box and distribute the food
before Christmas.
Anderson said the drive targets those most in need, especially the
elderly and single-parent households.
Recipients are screened by local relief organizations or government
agencies to verify degree of need.
All food will be distributed in the area where it is collected.
