Area golfers finish down in the
pack at regional tournaments

CEDAR CREEK LAKE–Area high school golf teams didn’t see a lot of success
at Region II tournaments this week.
Mabank’s girls finished 11th out of 16 teams at the Class 4A tournament,
held at Bridalwood Golf Club in Flower Mound.
The team finished with a two-round score of 909, shooting rounds of 458
and 451.
Sarah Bivins led the team with a tournament score of 212, followed by
Lauren Slaton (217), Macey Thomas (229), Elyssa Knowles (251) and Casey
Heard (262).
Kemp’s boys team finished 11th of 15 teams at the Class 3A tournament at
Tanglewood Country Club in Pottsboro.
Arthur Medina led the team with a two-round score of 163, followed by
Chase Traughber (171), Jesse Tischler (174), Chris Harper (177) and
Louis Voyles (177).
Kemp’s Ayla Harper, playing as an individual, finished with rounds of
103 and 108 for a tournament score of 211.
The Eustace girls team finished 14th out of 15 teams with a team
tournament score of 909, ahead of Dallas Roosevelt’s 1,050.
A scoring breakdown was not available for the Eustace girls at presstime
Thursday.
Highland Park’s Gold team won the girls 4A regional tournament with a
team score of 619, followed by Northwest’s 620.
Lindale won the boys 3A tournament with a team score of 609, followed by
Atlanta with 619. On the girls’ side, Spring Hill won the tournament
with a team score of 688, followed by Atlanta, who carded a team score
of 704.
KHS secures playoff berth

KEMP–Kemp’s Yellowjackets secured a second-place playoff spot by beating
the visiting Wills Point Tigers 7-3 Tuesday.
The win gave the ’Jackets a 4-4 District 12-3A record, and they’ll go as
the second seed.
The ’Jackets will face the Mt. Vernon Tigers, the District 11-3A
third-place team, in the first round of the playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday,
May 5, in Lindale.
Crandall gets a bye in the first round of the playoffs after finishing
district play 10-0, while Kaufman edged Eustace for the third-place
playoff berth.
The ’Jackets will visit Edgewood for a warm-up game against the hosting
Bulldogs at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 2.
Against Wills Point, the ’Jackets took control of the contest in the
third inning, scoring three runs and knocking Tiger starter Casey
Mayfield off the mound.
Reliever Colton Newton was able to come in and get the Tigers out of a
bases-loaded jam, but the ’Jackets had shown the visitors they meant
business.
Kemp starter Brett Kennedy shut the Tigers down most of the contest,
with Mikie Scruggs coming in to get the final two outs of the game.
Leif Skierski led the ’Jacket attack, going 3-for-4 with a double and
scoring twice, while J.R. Frizzell went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
Nick Sallings went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Matt Carr went 2-for-3
with two RBIs and scored a run.
Scruggs was 2-for-3 with a double, while Josh Carr added an RBI
sacrifice fly.
Michael Haney was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Sexton heads to regionals for
fourth straight year

DENTON–Mabank High School senior Ashley Sexton advanced to the Region II
tennis tournament for the fourth straight year Wednesday.
Playing at the brand-new Warrench Tennis Center on the University of
North Texas campus, Sexton lost in the first round of singles
competition to fifth-seeded Chelsea Benner of Midlothian, 6-4, 4-6, 1-6.
Sexton has advanced to the third round of the Class 4A regional tennis
in the past, but has been knocked out in the first round the last two
years.
Sexton has been accepted at both the University of Texas at Austin and
Texas Tech University in Lubbock, and has not decided which university’s
pre-pharmacy program she will attend.
