Destroyers take runner-up spot at
Waxahachie tourney
Special to The Monitor
WAXAHACHIE–The U12 Destroyers recently took second overall at the
Waxahachie Invitational soccer tournament.
Through two days and three games, the Destroyers, coached by Bruce
Tower, had not been scored on, as they defeated Rowlett 3-0, Duncanville
8-0 and Grand Prairie 1-0.
In the semi-finals, the Destroyers destroyed Ennis, 8-0, putting them
into the finals against undefeated and unscored-on Brownwood.
Brownwood took third in the state championships last year, knocking the
Destroyers out in the quarterfinals.
In an aggressive, intense and hard-fought contest, Brownwood came out on
top, downing the Destroyers 3-2.
One Destroyer goal was called back on an offsides ruling.
“It was one of our greatest games,” Tower said later. “It was back and
forth play, with great saves on both sides of the ball.
“I’m extremely proud of the boys’ efforts,” Tower added. “It was our
best tournament to date.”
At the end-of-tournament awards ceremony, tournament director Michael
Sanders said “This was, by far, the best game of the entire tournament.”
The U12 Destroyers will be competing in the Dallas Morning News
Invitational tournament in the near future. A state-qualifying
tournament, the DMN competition is by invitation only, extended to the
top two teams in a division.
