Mabank slaps Mineola
Monitor Staff Reports
MINEOLA–Despite a “sluggish” opening, the Mabank Panthers did pretty
well in their initial controlled scrimmage at Mineola Saturday.
The Panthers were originally scheduled to host a controlled scrimmage
against Rains Thursday (tonight), but that scrimmage will be held in
Lancaster, with the varsity starting around 6 p.m. There’s no junior
varsity scrimmage, and the freshmen open the evening’s activities at 5
At Mineola, the Panthers scored every time they had the ball on offense,
and did not allow a score on defense – in fact, the Panther defense
posted a safety.
“We didn’t play that well, technique-wise, but anytime you can play with
bad reads and still get to the ball, you’re doing okay,” Panther head
coach Jimmy Cantrell said.
During the scrimmage, the hosting District 15-3A Yellowjackets didn’t
come close to scoring on the first-team Panther defense. The first-team
Panthers scored on both their offensive possessions, and also scored
with the second team offense.
During the “live” quarter, the Panthers forced a safety.
The Yellowjackets nabbed the only Panther turnover on an interception
inside the Mineola 5, and that’s where the Panther defense was able to
hold the ’Jackets and record the safety, Cantrell said.
“Our running game is pretty explosive, as I thought it would be,”
Cantrell said. “Our receivers caught most everything we threw.”
Last year’s Panther offense was a quick-strike weapon. “This year, we’re
going to have to sustain some drives,” Cantrell added.
While the outing was, in many respects, a typical first scrimmage,
“we’ve answered some of the questions we needed to answer,” he said. “As
a team, we played well.”
