Kemp downed by Caddo Mills after rough eighth inning

KEMP–The Kemp Yellowjackets dropped an exciting extra inning contest against the Caddo Mills Foxes March 22 at home.
Mason Claver took the mound as the starting pitcher for Kemp against Caddo Mills.
The Foxes started their offensive push early in the top of the first inning against the ’Jackets. Caddo Mills started off the inning with back-to-back singles and a throw down to second base on a double steal proved ineffective as the Foxes put runners on second and third base with no outs.
A sacrifice fly put the Foxes ahead 1-0 before they delivered with an RBI single to make it a 2-0 game and put runners on the corners with one out. Another double steal pushed another run across the plate for the Foxes as they ended the top half of the inning with a 3-0 lead.
The ’Jackets managed to get a one-out infield single from Dakota Price and a walk from Dylan Ashcraft but couldn’t manage to plate a run as they trailed 3-0 after the first inning.
Claver held the Foxes off the board in the top of the second inning as the ’Jackets looked to respond in the bottom half of the inning.
Ethyn Irvin led the inning off with a walk and a stolen base and after moving over to third base, Irvin was driven in by his brother Boomer Irvin on a groundout to first base to put Kemp on the board to cut the deficit to 3-1.
After the Foxes led off the top of the third inning with a walk and the runner advancing on a bad throw to first base, Claver had to work out of a tough situation as the Foxes had a runner in scoring position with no outs.
Claver ended the inning dominant as he proceeded to strike out three straight Caddo Mills batters to end the inning and set up the ’Jackets at the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning after a scoreless top of the fourth inning as well for the Foxes.
Cameron Fiatte led off the inning with a single, followed by a walk from Dylan Ashcraft and a bunt single from Josh Stewart to load the bases with no outs. Cameron Clamon stepped to the plate and sent a deep fly ball to center field to score a run on a sacrifice fly, but a base running error from the ’Jackets led to a double play to make it 3-2 with two outs. Kemp ended the inning with a groundout to the pitcher as they missed an opportunity to get back to even with the Foxes.
The Foxes notched another run on a two-out RBI double to increase Caddo Mills’ lead to 4-2 entering the bottom of the fifth inning.
A leadoff double from Noah Herring and a walk from Ashcraft, plus a wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs.
Claver helped himself out with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 4-3 for the ’Jackets.
Fiatte added an RBI single for Kemp to tie the game 4-4. A double steal on the next play put runners on second and third with one out once again for Kemp. Ethyn Irvin put Kemp in front for the first time in the game on a wild pitch as the ’Jackets took a 5-4 lead.
After a walk from Boomer Irvin and a stolen base, the throw down to second base went into center field to plate another run for Kemp to make it a 6-4 game.
Clamon added an RBI groundout and added a run scored on another throwing error from the Foxes as Kemp led 8-4 after five innings.
Defense started to cost the ’Jackets runs in the top of the sixth inning as they committed errors in center field and at second base as two errors led to two runs for the Foxes as they cut the deficit to 8-6. A two-run double followed for the Foxes to tie the game 8-8 before another fielding error put the Foxes back in from 9-8 after six innings.
Down to their final three outs, Stewart had a one-out single and advanced to second on a stolen base. Clamon moved Stewart over to third base on a groundout as the ’Jackets got down to a 2-2 count with two outs at the plate. A wild pitch secured a run for Kemp as Stewart crossed the plate to tie the game 9-9.
The inning ended with an intentional walk to Herring, followed by an ejection on his way to first base and a caught stealing ended the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings.
An RBI single and a two-run single started the eighth inning for the Foxes as they jumped back in front 12-9.
A two-run triple and an RBI single increased the Caddo Mills lead to 15-9.
Two more RBI singles and an RBI double left the ’Jackets trailing 19-9 as they entered the bottom of the eighth inning.
Three straight singles from Claver, Irvin and Taylor Donovan loaded the bases with no outs for the ’Jackets. Joseph Frey delivered with RBI single for Kemp, but that would be the lone run for the ’Jackets in the bottom of the eighth inning as Kemp fell 19-10 Friday night.
Despite both players not picking up hits in the game, Clamon and Boomer Irvin delivered two RBIs apiece in the loss to Caddo Mills.
Fiatte and Herring each added three hits in the game for Kemp with Fiatte driving in one run and scoring two runs.
Claver finished with a no-decision for Kemp as he went 5.2 innings, surrendering four runs (one earned) on just one hit with three walks and five strikeouts.
The loss drops Kemp to 3-11 on the season. The ’Jackets kick off district play this week with a home-and-home against the Scurry-Rosser Wildcats on the road March 29 with first pitch for the varsity game scheduled for 7 p.m.
