Kemp tops Eustace in district opener on road

EUSTACE–The Kemp Yellowjackets took down the Eustace Bulldogs to begin their district schedule Oct. 11 on the road.
The ’Jackets began the game with a bit of trickery as they recovered an onside kick to begin the night.
A 2:47 drive ended with a 22-yard touchdown catch by Kemp receiver Ethyn Irvin on fourth down to put the ’Jackets in front 7-0.
The ’Jackets added another touchdown on a nine-yard run from senior tight end CJ Henderson as he added onto the lead to make it 14-0 Kemp with 2:03 remaining in the first quarter.
Eustace made a long drive down the field to begin the second quarter trailing 14-0. The Bulldogs pushed their way into the red zone before being stopped by Kemp on fourth down as they turned the ball over on downs at the ’Jackets’ eight-yard line.
After a late Kemp timeout with 3:48 remaining in the first half, the Bulldogs picked up a huge first down on 4th-and-8. Eustace was unable to convert on their opportunity as they failed to get on the board.  
Kemp was driving late in the second quarter, looking to add one more score before the end of the half.
On a ’Jackets fourth down, Kemp fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Eustace junior linebacker Stefen Brooks on Kemp’s 20-yard line.
After a timeout by Eustace with 12 seconds remaining, the Bulldogs tried a late lateral, which was fumbled and picked up by the ’Jackets and run back to the Kemp 48-yard line. Irvin ran the ball from the 48-yard line as the clock hit zero all the way back down the field before being tackled just shy of the end zone to end the first half with Kemp ahead 14-0.
Henderson opened the first three minutes of the third quarter with another nine-yard touchdown run to make it 20-0 Kemp with 9:03 remaining in the third quarter.
Irvin added a late score early in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard touchdown catch for his second score of the night, increasing Kemp’s lead to 27-0.
Henderson tacked onto the score for the ’Jackets with his third touchdown of the night on a five-yard run to make it a 34-0 game.
Eustace finally broke through with 41 seconds remaining in the game on a six-yard touchdown run by senior running back Marquavius Griffin. It wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs dropped their fifth straight contest and their first district game as Kemp came up victorious 34-6.
Griffin led the way for the Bulldogs offensive with 16 carries for 50 yards and the lone Eustace touchdown against Kemp.
The ’Jackets dominated offensively, pushing for 466 (257 rushing, 209 passing) total yards of offense against Eustace.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 1-5 overall and 0-1 to begin district play. Eustace returns to the field at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 on the road against the Life Oak Cliff Lions (5-1, 0-1 district).
Kemp moves to 2-4 overall and 1-0 to begin the district portion of their schedule. The ’Jackets hit the road  with a 7 p.m. scheduled kickoff Thursday, Oct. 17 as they take on the Dallas Madison Trojans (5-1, 1-0 district).
