ATHENS–Twelve AHS Band soloists participated virtually this month in the UIL Regional Solo/Ensemble Contest.
Ten out of the twelve soloists came back with a 1st division (superior) rating on their solo and the other two soloists came back with a 2nd division (excellent) rating on their solo.
One percussion student, Connor Wilcoxson (pictured) memorized his Class 1 (hardest difficulty level) solo and made a 1st division rating. Connor, who is also an ATSSB All-State percussionist, now advances to the Texas State Solo/Ensemble Contest held virtually in June.
“I would also like to express my admiration for the students who were working diligently on their solos and ensembles, yet were not able to compete due to quarantine procedures,” said Mormon. “We have great student musicians here at Athens and I am very proud to be their band director,” said Stephen Morman.
Other soloists who competed are: Kattie Garcia, flute, division 1; Sabrina Becker, bassoon, division 1; Leticia Banda, clarinet, division 1; Flor Lopez, bass clarinet, division 2; Becca Ashley, trumpet, division 1; Payton Crowell, trumpet, division 2; Morgan Butler, horn, division 1; Gabriel Wofford, trombone, division 1; Alvaro Rodriguez, trombone, division 1; Trinidad Garcia, tuba, division 1; and Josh Mason, percussion, division 1.
Morman also recognized band staff members Cheyenne Hernandez, Steven Reiss and Andy Nguyen “for putting in countless hours with these students leading up to the solo/ensemble contest and having to deal with the cancellation of events in which so much time was spent with students in preparation.”
