Loss snaps 11-game streak that won district, bi-district and area
CENTERVILLE and FAIRFIELD–The bi-district and area champion Kerens Bobcat boys basketball team fell to Grapeland in the regional round of the basketball playoffs, 80-32, in Feb. 26 quarterfinal action at Fairfield.
The loss to Grapeland snapped an 11-game win streak for Kerens, which included nine consecutive victories that clinched the outright District 19-2A title, along with two more wins that secured bi-district and area playoff championships against Groveton and Chilton, respectively.
During the Feb. 22 area championship game in Centerville, Kerens fell behind early to the Chilton Pirates, 12-4, after the Pirates hit a 3-pointer with two minutes remaining in the opening period. A TK Davis steal and bucket with seven seconds left in the first period cut the Chilton lead to 14-8.
The Bobcats roared back early in the second period behind a CJ Davis coast-to-coast layup, two Tre Langley free throws and a Tyler Carter basket off a Langley bounce pass that knotted the score at 14, the latter of which forced Chilton to call timeout.
After that timeout, Chilton took a 22-18 lead. Langley tied things up for Kerens with two baskets, then Jay Thomas gave the Bobcats a 24-22 lead by banking a bucket off the backboard. Langley extended Kerens’ halftime lead to 26-22 on a basket with 31 seconds left in the first half.
The Bobcats continued their momentum in the second half with baskets from Carter and TJ Bailey. Chilton made a single free throw to briefly break the Bobcat offensive onslaught, which continued with six Langley points, a Bailey steal and bucket, and a three-point play by CJ Davis.
Now up 41-23, Kerens allowed two Chilton free throws then went on another tear, featuring four Langley points and a Carter bucket that put Kerens ahead 47-25. Chilton finished the third period with four points to cut the Kerens lead to 47-29 entering the final quarter.
Field goals from Ino Garcia and Bailey kept Chilton briefly at bay before the Pirates came within six points of Kerens with two minutes remaining in the game. Bailey and Carter combined to give Kerens precious points in the waning moments of the game, which ended with a 56-49 Kerens victory.
During the area championship game win over Chilton, Tre Langley led Kerens with 20 points, followed by Tyler Carter, who scored 15 points. CJ Davis added seven points, TJ Bailey had six points, Jay Thomas put in four points and TK Davis and Ino Garcia scored two points apiece.
