CEDAR CREEK LAKE–Mayors from Enchanted Oaks, Gun Barrel City and Tool signed proclamations with the assistance of members of The Daughters of the American Revolution, (DAR) declaring the week of Sept. 17 – 23 as Constitution Week. This year is the 65th anniversary of Constitution Week.
DAR made their own resolution for Constitution Week which was adopted April 21, 1955. The first resolution to observe Constitution Week was made June 14, 1955 by Senator William F. Knowland of California. Then, both Houses of Congress passed the resolution and President Eisenhower issued his proclamation August 19, 1955. The first observance of Constitution Week was so successful that the President designated Sept. 17 - 23 annually as Constitution Week.
DAR Hall located in Washington, D.C., has the inscription on the pediment, “Constitution Hall – a memorial to that immortal document, the Constitution of the United States, in which are incorporated the principles of freedom, equality and justice for which our forefathers strove.” DAR Constitution Hall is the only structure dedicated to the U.S. Constitution.
“The constitution is a living document that assures each citizen of the freedoms Americans cherish and appreciate. As members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, it is our responsibility to keep our ancestors’ legacy alive by promoting the ideals they fought valiantly to give their descendants,” DAR said.
