BROWNSBORO–The Athens Hornets dismantled the Brownsboro Bears in their season opener to take home the Highway 31 championship trophy Aug. 27 on the road.
The Hornets showed complete offensive dominance as they caged the Bears 41-7.
The Hornets opened the scoring on a 31-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
A second-quarter explosion by the Hornets’ offense in the second quarter saw them score four touchdowns against the Bears, three in the air and one on the ground, to increase their lead to 34-0 at halftime.
The Bears got on the board on a 23-yard touchdown pass to wreck the Hornets’ shutout to make it 34-7 in the third quarter.
The Hornets added one final touchdown on a 14-yard run in the fourth quarter as they topped the Bears in their first game of the season, 41-7.
Athens quarterback Ty Arroyo went 14/17 with 207 passing yards and four touchdown passes.
Jaden Crane added six receptions for 104 yards and one touchdown in the win over the Bears.
Jorien Ray led the way for the Hornets with three catches and two touchdowns.
The Hornets (1-0) look to keep the winning tradition alive as they head into week two as they battle the Waxahachie Life Mustangs (0-1) Friday, Sept. 3 at home with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
