ATHENS–The Athens Hornets dropped their final game before their bye week against the Henderson Lions at home Oct. 1.
The Hornets’ offense struggled in the first half as the Lions scored in bunches in a 58-41 victory.
Henderson opened the scoring with a 31-yard touchdown reception just 2:30 into the first quarter to take an early 7-0 lead.
Athens responded with a long 51-yard touchdown catch from Jermarius Moore with 5:37 remaining to tie the game 7-7.
Just over a minute later, the Lions moved back in front as the long bombs continued with a 64-yard touchdown pass to put Henderson on top 14-7.
Henderson added another touchdown halfway through the second quarter to increase their lead to 21-7.
Athens did score late in the second quarter to cut the Henderson lead to 21-14 after a two-yard touchdown run from quarterback Ty Arroyo.
The Lions added a last-second 35-yard field goal to make it 24-14 at halftime.
Despite a 27-point second half, the Hornets were no match for the 34-point output from the Lions as Henderson took the district win, 58-41.
Athens falls to 0-2 in district play and 4-2 overall as they enter their bye week. The Hornets (4-2, 0-2 district) return to action Oct. 15 on the road against the Lindale Eagles (3-3, 2-0 district).
