Newly elected Athens ISD board member Bryan Barker (right) was sworn in during Monday’s regular monthly board meeting. Barker replaced outgoing Board President Alicea Elliott. Trustees voted to appoint Eugene Buford (left) as the new board president. Buford was elected to the board in 2017 and has considerable experience as a classroom teacher, principal and superintendent. Gina Hunter (not pictured) was re-appointed to serve as board vice president and Chris House (center) was chosen to serve as secretary. Hunter was elected to the school board in 2018 and House in 2019. “I look forward to working with Mr. Barker as part of our team of eight,” said AISD Superintendent Dr. Janie Sims. “And while we will miss Mrs. Elliott and the talents she brought to the district, we couldn’t ask for a better replacement as board president than Mr. Buford, who brings a lifetime of public school experience with him.” **A note about the photo: Trustees removed their masks only long enough to have the picture taken.
