ATHENS–Zac Harrell is used to being on the other sideline when the Athens Hornets are playing. After standing across the field with Van, Harrell took over as Athletic Director/Head Football Coach for the Athens Hornets after Paul Essary stepped down in 2018.
Harrell spent four years as offensive coordinator at Van as well as playing against Athens as a kid growing up in Ennis.
With a big focus on doing the right thing, on and off the field, Harrell believes he can bring a more rounded team to the field that is focused and ready to fight for each other.
Under Essary, the Hornets returned to the postseason in 2018 after going 5-5 overall and 3-2 in district play. They would eventually fall to Van in the Bi-district round as they were overpowered offensively.
The Hornets under Harrell look to start a new tradition of success and athletic prowess as they enter the 2019 season. Athens gets their season underway Aug. 30 on the road against their rival Brownsboro with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
