Bulldogs fall at home despite late surge

EUSTACE–The Eustace Bulldogs dropped their district game to the Blooming Grove Lions Jan. 29 at home.
Jarrett Marcom opened the scoring for the Bulldogs as he drained a three-pointer to begin the night by giving Eustace a 3-0 lead. 
Adrian Gonzales quickly added a layup to put Eustace ahead 5-0.
Ethan Austin and Gonzales then hit four straight free throws as the Bulldogs jumped ahead 9-2 early in the first quarter.
Austin and Tucker Reeve then hit back-to-back three-pointer to put Eustace ahead 17-6 in the final minute.
Blake Martin finished off a layup at the buzzer for the Bulldogs as they jumped out to a 19-8 lead after the first quarter.
The tides quickly turned for the Bulldogs in the first minute of the second quarter as the Lions rattled off nine straight points to cut the deficit to 19-17 before Austin deposited a free throw for Eustace’s first point of the quarter.
The Lions immediately answered with three straight three-pointers to take their first lead of the night, 26-20. 
Martin, Gonzales and Reeve all added late free throws, but the Bulldogs trailed 34-26 at halftime. 
The Bulldogs began to storm back in the third quarter as a layup from Marcom, followed by another layup from Reeve and a three-pointer from Martin cut the deficit for Eustace to 40-36.
After a free throw and three-pointer from Marcom cut the deficit to two points at 42-40, Blooming Grove went on a 7-1 run to move ahead 49-41 with 18.6 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Austin hit a three-pointer for the Bulldogs to make it 49-44, but the Lions hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to take a 52-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Austin went 2/2 from the free throw line, with Marcom following that with a three-pointer to make it 60-49.
Martin picked up an and-1 as the deficit for the Bulldogs went to 64-52.
The Bulldogs battled back late with a three-pointer from Bryce Fiscus and a layup from Mark Patek to cut the deficit to 69-57.
Cade Adair added one final three-pointer for the Bulldogs, but it wasn’t enough as Eustace dropped their district game 71-62 to Blooming Grove.
Austin led the way with 15 points for the Bulldogs against the Lions.
Marcom wasn’t far behind as he racked up 13 points while Martin added 10 and Reeve put up nine points in the loss to Blooming Grove.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 17-9 overall and 4-5 in district play. 
Eustace hits the court Feb. 5 against Palmer with tipoff at 5 p.m. on the road. Eustace then returns home for their Senior Night Feb. 8 against Mildred before finishing the regular season on the road against Scurry-Rosser Feb. 12.
